MIAMI, Fla. – First-year
Jordan Kang hit two home runs, and sophomore
Sawyer Feller and
Chris Snopek each hit his second home run of the weekend, but Harvard University baseball fell at Florida International University in 12 innings, 9-8, on Sunday afternoon at FIU Baseball Stadium.
Closing out a four-game series, the Crimson (1-7) rallied from a 7-3 deficit with four runs in the top of the ninth to force extra innings and took an 8-7 lead in the top of the 12
th before the host Panthers (7-6) plated two runs in the bottom of the 12
th for the walk-off win.
Kang hit his first two collegiate home runs while Feller and Snopek each hit his second homer of the season. Senior right-handed pitcher
James Kirkpatrick threw 4.1 innings of scoreless relief, permitting two hits and one walk with three strikeouts.
The Crimson battled the Panthers in all four games of the series with one run deciding three of the four contests, including two games that went to extra innings.
Harvard Highlights
- First-year Jordan Kang hit his first two career home runs, totaling four RBIs on the two shots. His three-run homer in the ninth tied the game at 7-7 to force extras.
- Sophomore Sawyer Feller and junior Chris Snopek each hit his second homer of the weekend. Feller's shot came in the ninth before Snopek's homer came in the 12th.
- Junior Jake Berger went 3-for-6 with a double and an RBI, junior Peter Messervy tallied two hits, a double, and a run, and junior Ben Rounds notched an RBI.
- The Crimson totaled 14 hits in the game, including four home runs and two doubles.
- Senior right-hander James Kirkpatrick threw 4.1 scoreless innings out of the bullpen, permitting two hits and one walk with three strikeouts.
- Senior right-hander Will Jacobsen started on the mound, tossing 4.0 innings and allowing three runs – all earned – on five hits and one walk with three strikeouts.
How It Happened
- Harvard struck first, taking a 1-0 lead on a sacrifice fly from Rounds in the top of the first. FIU tied it at 1-1 with a run in the bottom of the first.
- The Crimson re-took the lead in the top of the second as Kang drove his first career home run to right center field, giving the visitors a 2-1 edge.
- The Panthers plated five runs in the bottom of the fifth to gain a 6-2 advantage.
- Harvard trimmed the lead to 6-3 in the top of the sixth as Berger sent an RBI single to right field. The hosts moved the margin to 7-3 with a run in the last of the sixth.
- The Crimson knotted the score at 7-7 with a pair of home runs in the top of the ninth. Feller launched his second home run of the weekend – a solo shot – to make the score 7-4 before Kang drove a three-run homer over the wall in left center.
- Snopek drove a homer to left center field in the top of the 12th to give Harvard back the lead at 8-7.
