Vermont Pulls Away Late From Women's Lacrosse in 12-7 Contest

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Junior midfielder Callie Hem had three goals and sophomore goalie Lizzie Francioli had a season high seven saves, but Harvard women's lacrosse (0-4) fell to Vermont (2-4), 12-7, on Tuesday night (March 7) at Jordan Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Harvard and Vermont were knotted at 3-3 after the first quarter, trading goals in the opening 15 minutes. Hem started the scoring, cutting into the circle and firing across cage from the right side to put Harvard up 1-0 at 13:49.
  • Charley Meier, who led Harvard with five ground balls, answered a Vermont goal, taking a great feed from Ilana Kofman from behind the net and firing a quick high-low shot into the net at 10:34 to make it 2-1 Harvard.
  • Caroline Mullahy scored on a free position shot with 5:37 to play in the first quarter to put Harvard ahead, before a three-goal Vermont run gave the Catamounts the lead once again midway through the second quarter.
  • Harvard scored twice in a span of 45 seconds late in the quarter to keep in touch. Riley Campbell hit the top corner on a run from the right side, making a great move to shake a Vermont defender with 3:03 to go in the half. Then Hem tied the game, cutting right in front of the crease and flipping a shot into the net at 2:17 to make it 5-5. Vermont scored in the final minute of the half to take a one goal lead after 30 minutes of play.
  • Hem scored her third goal of the night in the opening minute of the third quarter, again cutting in front of cage and flipping a shot into the net from in close at 14:03.
  • But a six goal run for the Catamounts extending into the fourth quarter put Vermont ahead for good. Kofman stopped the run with her second goal of the season off a great pass from Mullahy with 3:29 to go in the game.
