Baseball Comes Back to Take Series Opener from Cornell, 7-6

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Junior right-handed pitcher Jay Driver tallies seven strikeouts over five innings, and the Crimson worked a season-high 12 walks as Harvard University baseball scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the eighth to take a 7-6 decision over Cornell University on Friday afternoon at O'Donnell Field.
 
Trailing 2-0, the Crimson (12-17, 8-2 Ivy) scored the game's next six runs to move ahead 6-2, and after the visiting Big Red (4-20, 3-7 Ivy) knotted the score at 6-6 in the top of the eighth, the hosts plated the decisive run in the bottom of the eighth to earn the victory.
 
Harvard, currently first in the Ivy League standings, improved to 10-3 in its last 13 games, moved to 7-1 in its last eight games, and won its sixth straight Ivy League contest.
 
Driver tossed 5.0 innings with seven strikeouts, giving up two runs, both earned, on six hits and one walk. Senior left-hander Harrison Stovern captured the win, throwing 2.0 innings and permitting one run on two hits with no walks.
 
Junior Jake Berger posted the go-ahead RBI in the eighth alongside two walks and two runs scored. First-year Gio Colasante totaled a hit, two walks, an RBI, and a run, and junior Ben Rounds finished with a double, a walk, and a run.

How It Happened

  • Trailing 2-0, the Crimson first put runs on the board in the fifth inning. Harvard put together a three-run frame behind a sacrifice fly from Bravo, an RBI single from Jacobsen, and a run-scoring single from Colasante.
  • The Crimson scored again in the sixth as Giberti came across to score the lone run of the inning for Harvard, which brought the score to 4-2 in favor of the Crimson.
  • Harvard expanded its lead to 6-2 in the seventh as Berger and Colasante each came home on wild pitches.
  • The Big Red then tied the game at 6-6 with four runs in the top of the eighth.
  • Harvard came back to reclaim the advantage in the eighth inning. The Crimson scored on an RBI single to left field off the bat of Berger, bringing the score to 7-6 in favor of Harvard.
  • Stovern then threw a one-two-three ninth to secure the victory.
