Baseball Splits Doubleheader with Brown; Series Finale Postponed to Tuesday

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Harvard University baseball earned a 4-1 victory in game one before Brown University took game two, 4-3, to split an Ivy League doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Attanasio Family Field at Murray Stadium.
 
The Crimson (13-21, 9-5 Ivy) took 3-0 leads to open both games, maintaining the lead throughout in game one before the Bears (8-22, 5-9 Ivy) rallied to score three runs in the bottom of the ninth to split the day's contests.
 
Due to weather, the teams postponed the series finale – originally scheduled for Sunday, Apr. 23 – to Tuesday, Apr. 25 at a to be determined time.
 
In game one, junior right-handed pitcher Jay Driver and first-year right-hander Callan Fang combined to allow just one run on five hits with 11 strikeouts.
 
In game two, junior right-hander Chris Clark threw 5.2 scoreless innings with nine strikeouts while sophomore George Cooper went 4-for-5. 

GAME 1: Harvard 4, Brown 1

 
Junior right-handed pitcher Jay Driver and first-year right-hander Callan Fang combined to allow just one run on five hits with 11 strikeouts as Harvard beat Brown in game one, 4-1.
 
The Crimson took a 3-0 lead through four innings and did not allow the Bears to score after the fifth en route to the victory.
 
Driver tossed 6.0 innings in the win, permitting one run with four strikeouts while Fang gained his second career save, tossing 3.0 scoreless innings and matching his career-high with seven strikeouts. Senior Zach Brown notched two hits and two RBIs, and junior Jake Berger totaled two hits, two runs, and an RBI.

How It Happened

  • Harvard started the scoring in the top of the second as senior Will Jacobsen put a ball in play that allowed Berger to score from second.
  • The Crimson extended its lead to 3-0 in the top of the fourth behind a two-run single to center field from Brown.
  • The Bears trimmed the margin to 3-1 with a run in the bottom of the fifth.
  • In the top of the seventh, Berger lifted a sacrifice fly to center field to plate Rounds, bringing the score to 4-1.
  • Harvard did not allow the hosts to score in the sixth through ninth frames to secure the win.

GAME 2: Brown 4, Harvard 3

Junior right-handed pitcher Chris Clark threw 5.2 scoreless innings in the start, and sophomore George Cooper posted a season-high four hits, but Harvard fell to Brown in Saturday's second game, 4-3.
 
The Crimson held a 3-0 lead entering the eighth inning before the Bears scored once in the eighth and three times in the ninth to split the day's twin bill.
 
Clark tallied nine strikeouts and permitted just one hit over his 5.2 innings while Cooper registered his second four-hit game of the season.

  • Junior right-hander Chris Clark threw 5.2 innings in the start, giving up no runs on one hit and four walks with nine strikeouts. He totaled seven or more strikeouts for the seventh time in nine starts this season.
  • Sophomore George Cooper went 4-for-5 with an RBI. He registered his second four-hit game of the season.

  • The Crimson started the scoring in the top of the first as Baldwin hustled home on a wild pitch for the first run of the game.
  • Harvard added to its lead with a run in the top of the fifth behind an RBI single to left field from Cooper.
  • The visitors extended their edge to 3-0 in the eighth as Berger lifted a sacrifice fly to right field.
  • Brown cut the margin to 3-1 with a run in the bottom of the eighth.
  • The Bears then scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth to walk off with the win.

Harvard closes the series at Brown with a single game on Tuesday, Apr. 25 at a to be determined time. Officials postponed the series finale, which was originally slated for Sunday, Apr. 23 due to weather.
