Zach Brown launched his first home run of the year, and Harvard University baseball defeated Columbia University, 13-3, on Saturday afternoon at O'Donnell Field, securing a three-game series sweep and a spot in the four-team Ivy League tournament.
The Crimson (17-21, 13-5 Ivy) broke open a 3-3 game with the Lions (23-16, 11-7 Ivy) behind a six-run fourth inning as Harvard scored the game's final 10 runs to remain atop the Ivy League standings. Harvard earned its second series sweep in Ivy play and has won five of its six conference sets on the season.
With the weekend's results, Harvard locked in its place in the inaugural Ivy League tournament, which will feature four teams for the first time in conference history. The tournament will follow the same format as the NCAA Regionals and will take place at the site of the No. 1 seed from May 19-22.
Bravo launched his fifth homer of the season and added a bases-clearing double for his four RBIs as the Crimson tallied double-figure runs for the sixth time this season and double-digit hits (16) for the 18
th time this year.
Harvard Highlights
- Junior right-handed pitcher Jay Driver threw 7.0 innings in the start and win, allowing three runs – all earned – on four hits and two walks with five strikeouts.
- Senior Logan Bravo went 2-for-4 with a home run, a double, four RBIs, two runs, and a walk. He blasted his fifth homer of the year.
- Senior Zach Brown finished 3-for-5 with a home run, two RBIs, and two runs. He launched his first homer of the season.
- Junior Peter Messervy produced a 3-for-5 effort with two RBIs and two runs scored.
- Senior Hunter Baldwin posted two hits, an RBI, and a double.
- Sophomore George Cooper and first-year Gio Colasante each contributed two hits and a run.
- Junior Jake Berger added a hit, a walk, and two runs scored.
- Sophomore right-hander Sean Matson threw two scoreless innings to close the game, permitting one hit and no walks with three strikeouts.
- Harvard tallied double-figure runs for the sixth time on the year.
- The Crimson notched 16 hits in the game, marking its 18th game this season with double-digit hits.
How It Happened
- Harvard scored the game's first two runs, taking a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Berger came home following an error before a ground ball from Cooper brought home Messervy.
- Columbia cut the margin to 2-1 with a run in the top of the third.
- Bravo extended the Crimson's lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the third, blasting a solo home run to left field.
- The Lions tied the score at 3-3 with two runs in the top of the fourth.
- The Crimson re-gained a 9-3 edge with a six-run bottom of the fourth. Brown scored the frame's first run following a single from Cooper. Bravo then sent a bases-clearing double down the left field line, making the score 7-3. Bravo later scored on a wild pitch before Messervy capped the stanza's scoring with an RBI single.
- In the bottom of the fifth, Brown lifted his first homer of the year to left field, pushing Harvard's advantage to 10-3.
- The Crimson plated three insurance runs in the last of the eighth behind RBIs from Messervy, Baldwin, and Brown.
- Matson struck out the side in the top of the ninth to secure the victory.
