Men’s Tennis Dominates Arizona State to Punch Ticket to the Sweet Sixteen

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – For the second straight match, No. 11 Harvard Men's Tennis blanked their opponent, defeating No. 47 Arizona State, 4-0, to advance to their first NCAA Sweet Sixteen since 2004.

The one-two punch of duos in Daniel Milavsky and Harris Walker and Ronan Jachuck and Steven Sun continue to outperform their opponents.  Shortly after falling on No. 3. Jachcuk and Sun were victorious at the No. 2 position, winning 6-4.  To clinch the doubles point No. 62 Milavsky and Walker defeated Jacob Bullard and Constantinos Koshis (Arizona State), 6-3, putting the Crimson up 1-0 early.

As the Crimson looked to close the match out in singles, the two teams split first set wins with either squad pulling ahead on three courts.  Jachuck and Sun both won their first sets 7-5, at the No. 4 and 5 positions, respectively.  Sun ultimately gave the Crimson their first singles point after dominating the second set, 6-1.  Nearly mirroring Sun's results Jachuck cruised through the second set, winning 6-2.

With the Crimson a win away from clinching the match, Valdemar Pape pulled away from this opponent at the No. 6 position.  The first-year picked up his fourteenth win of the spring season, defeating Nicola Cigna (Arizona State), 6-4, 6-3.

Following the round of 32 win, Andrew Rueb '95, The Scott Mead '77 Head Coach for Harvard Men's Tennis, The James Herscot '58 Coach of Excellence, said, "I can't say enough about this team. They are so composed and tough. We won the doubles point and were instantly down on all six courts in singles. ASU jumped us right out of the gate. No one panicked. Ronan, Valdemar and Steven righted the ship and each took the first set. Danny, Henry and Harry lost the first set and bounced right back by taking the second sets. This is what our team is all about. I couldn't be more proud of them and how they represent Harvard."  Rueb continued by address the large crowd that filled Beren Tennis Center, "I also want to thank our alums, the wider Harvard and Boston tennis communities for coming out in such force today. We had over 500 fans - which I believe is an Ivy League record. It was an amazing atmosphere for college tennis. There is nothing like playing in front of a packed house. Thank you!"
