CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Harvard University baseball pitchers
Chris Clark and
Jay Driver were selected in the 2023 Major League Baseball Draft by the Los Angeles Angels and the Cleveland Guardians, respectively, this afternoon. The pair of right-handed pitchers bring the total number of draft picks in Harvard baseball history to 61.
On the second day of the draft, the Angels took Clark in the fifth round with the 147
th overall pick while the Guardians snagged Driver in the ninth round with the 278
th overall pick.
A Pennsylvania native, Clark earned a spot on the Ivy League All-Tournament Team this past season and gained CSC Academic All-District accolades. He ranked 14
th in the NCAA in strikeouts per nine innings (12.75) at the end of the Crimson's season. Clark led the Ivy League in strikeouts (93), while ranking sixth in innings pitched (65.2) and ninth in wins (four). In 2022, Clark earned Second Team All-Ivy honors, while ranking first in the league in opponent batting average (.200), fourth in ERA (3.19), and eighth in strikeouts (37) during league only play.
Clark's fifth round selection makes him the highest Crimson draft pick since 2002 (Ben Crockett – Round 3).
A Massachusetts native, Driver gained CSC Academic All-District honors this past spring, serving the team as a captain. He ranked fifth in the Ivy League in innings pitched (67.1), sixth in strikeouts (69), and eighth in ERA (4.41). In 2022, Driver earned First Team All-Ivy honors and gained Second Team NEIBA All-New England accolades. He ranked second in the Ivy League in saves (four) while leading the team in ERA (1.91), WHIP (1.16), and saves (four).
This past spring the Crimson gained a berth in the inaugural Ivy League Tournament in 2023, securing the No. 2 seed behind a 15-6 Ivy League record, marking Harvard's most Ivy League wins since 2005. The Crimson captured six of its seven Ivy League series during the regular season.
