Men’s Soccer Posts Shutout in 0-0 Draw with Rhode Island in Season Opener

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Sophomore goalkeeper Lucian Wood earned his first career shutout as Harvard University men's soccer kept a clean sheet in a 0-0 draw with the University of Rhode Island in its season and home opener on Friday afternoon at Jordan Field.
 
The Crimson (0-0-1) created several chances, while keeping the visiting Rams (1-0-2) – a side playing in its third match of 2023 – in check for the majority of the contest.
 
Dating back to last season, Harvard remained unbeaten in its last nine games, moving to 5-0-4 over that span, while the Crimson moved to 7-1-2 in its last 10 home games at Jordan Field.

Harvard Highlights

  • Appearing in his first collegiate contest, sophomore goalkeeper Lucian Wood made two saves in his first career shutout.
  • Among Harvard's field players, senior Nik White and junior Jan Riecke each played the full 90 minutes, anchoring the team's back line in the clean sheet.
  • Juniors Alessandro Arlotti and Marko Isakovic each tallied a game-high three shots.
  • As a team, Harvard led in shots (11-7) and shots on goal (3-2).
  • A total of 19 Crimson appeared in the contest, including collegiate debuts from first-years Andreas Savva, Ben Kelly, Erik Dalaker, and Dylan Tellado.
 

How It Happened

  • Senior Kaoru Fujiwara placed the game's first shot on target in the 13th minute behind buildup play from Arlotti and senior Ale Gutierrez.
  • Wood notched his first career save in the 19th minute, snaring a header off a corner kick.
  • Gutierrez helped create another excellent chance in the 21st minute as his pass from the right side found sophomore Marcos Ojea Quintana in front of the net where his driven shot was saved.
  • At the break, the Crimson led in shots (6-4) and shots on goal (3-1).
  • Harvard continued to place pressure on URI in the second half. In the 46th minute, Arlotti and Fujiwara posted back-to-back shots, and then in the 56th minute, Harvard generated consecutive shots from Arlotti and Isakovic.
  • The Crimson dealt with all of the Rams' chances in the second half, including turning aside a final charge in the 90th minute.
