Ebbinge Converts Penalty Kick, Men’s Soccer Earns 1-1 Draw with No. 12 Vermont

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Senior midfielder Willem Ebbinge converted a penalty kick in the 78th minute as Harvard University men's soccer earned a 1-1 draw with No. 12 University of Vermont on Saturday night at Jordan Field.
 
Competing in the third and final match of a three-game homestand, the Crimson (0-2-3) faced a 1-0 deficit at halftime following a penalty kick goal from the nationally ranked Catamounts (4-1-1) in the 18th minute before netting the equalizer in a second half in which the hosts held advantages in shots (11-3), shots on goal (5-1), and corner kicks (6-2).
 
Ebbinge scored his goal in his first start for the Crimson since coming back from OFC Olympic Qualifying where he helped New Zealand book its spot in the 2024 Summer Olympics.

How It Happened

  • In the 18th minute, Vermont opened the scoring with a penalty kick from Yaniv Bazini.
  • Arlotti tested the keeper in the 23rd minute following a ball forward from Ebbinge.
  • The Crimson generated several chances in the second half, beginning with a shot from Arlotti in the 57th minute following build-up play from Ebbinge and senior Kaoru Fujiwara.
  • Harvard continued the pressure in the 59th minute as Ebbinge drove a free kick on target that required a diving save.
  • White nearly broke through in the 65th minute as his shot ricocheted off the crossbar.
  • In the 77th minute, junior Kristján Gunnarsson played a ball forward to sophomore Marcos Ojea Quintana, whose shot needed an extended save from the keeper.
  • Ebbinge equalized for the Crimson in the 78th minute, chipping a penalty kick into the back of the net after Arlotti drew the penalty.
  • Harvard nearly took the lead in the 82nd minute as a shot from Arlotti was just stopped by the goalkeeper.
  • In the 85th minute, Willen stood tall to make a save and keep the scoreline at 1-1.
