CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – No. 15 Harvard field hockey (4-2, 1-0 Ivy) defeated Northeastern Sunday afternoon thanks to yet another fourth quarter explosion. Captain
Emily Guckian scored three goals for her first career hat-trick to help lift the Crimson to a decisive 5-1 win.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Northeastern had the first chance of the game thirty seconds in after an interception from the Huskies in the Crimson end. Northeastern was able to make their way into the circle and tried to force a pass across the field through traffic that the Crimson defense was swatted away.
Kate Oliver set up the first chance for Harvard with just under ten minutes in the first quarter. Oliver tried to find a streaking
Avery Donahue cross cage who just barely missed converting for her first goal of the season.
Kitty Chapple came out firing in the second quarter after the Crimson were awarded a corner attempt. Guckian tried to set up Chapple off the corner but she just barely missed only to get another great scoring chance not even thirty seconds later.
The second quarter was all Crimson after they started to really gain momentum in the offensive zone. First-year
Sage Piekarski battled her way down the sideline who found captain
Emily Guckian open in front for her first goal of the season. Harvard registered five shots in the second quarter.
Harvard was pushing offensively coming out of the break as they had a trio of corner attempts early in the third quarter. While they were unable to convert the Crimson controlled much of the zone time in the third frame.
Marie Schaefers got a great look off yet another corner that the Northeastern goalkeeper was just able to get a piece of in a fantastic save. Schaefers produced the best chance of the game for Harvard to that point.
In the fourth quarter,
Lara Beekhuis scored her second of the season after a great pass from
Lucy Leel. Leel corralled a rebound from an
Emily Guckian shot and found Beekhuis for a tap in to put the Crimson up by two.
Harvard exploded in the fourth quarter for the second game in a row after four goals in the final frame.
Emily Guckian added goals three and four for the Crimson to complete her first career hat-trick. The captain scored two goals in four minutes.
The Huskies converted on a fourth quarter corner attempt to give them their first goal of the game and make it 4-1 late in the fourth quarter.
With the clock dying down
Siena Horton scored her first goal of the season at the buzzer to cap off a 5-1 win for Harvard. The Crimson move to 4-2 on the season.
HARVARD HIGHLIGHTS
- Piekarski now has three points in four games for the Crimson.
- The Crimson defense has only allowed nine shots in two games.
- Guckian completes her first career hat-trick and multi-goal game in the win.
