Football Quartet to Open 2023 Season with NFL Clubs

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Harvard football quartet of Truman Jones '23, Kyle Juszczyk '13, Tyler Ott '14 and Chris Smith '22 will open the 2023 National Football League season this week with four different NFL franchises. The Crimson's four representatives on NFL teams is tied for the most in the Ivy League along with Princeton. 
 
Juszczyk and Ott earned spots on the 53-man rosters of the San Francisco 49ers and Baltimore Ravens, respectively. Recent graduates, Jones and Smith, meanwhile, find themselves on the practice squads of the Kansas City Chiefs and Detroit Lions.
 
Beginning his 11th season in the NFL, Juszczyk enters 2023 as a seven-time Pro Bowl selection, with each appearance coming in the last seven years. After spending his first four seasons with the Ravens, the tight end has spent the last six years with the 49ers, a team he helped reach Super Bowl XXXVII. Across 10 seasons, Juszczyk has compiled 248 receptions for 2,345 yards and 14 touchdowns. On the ground, meanwhile, he has racked up 205 yards and five TDs on 57 carries.
 
Ott opens his ninth season in the NFL and his first with Baltimore in 2023. After entering the league in 2015 with the New York Giants, Ott's journey has taken him to Cincinnati and Seattle over the last seven years. After splitting the 2016 campaign between the Bengals and Seahawks, the long snapper/center became a fixture in Seattle over the next six years, earning a Pro Bowl invitation following the 2020 season. Ott brings with him to Baltimore 85 career games under his belt.
 
Jones finished his Harvard career in 2022 and was signed by the Chiefs as an undrafted free agent soon after the NFL Draft this past April. A native of Atlanta, Georgia, Jones was one of the top players in the FCS, capturing All-America accolades from five different media outlets, while also earning CSC Academic All-America honors. The 148th team captain in Harvard football history was additionally the co-recipient of the Bushnell Cup, which is given annually to the Ivy League's top defensive player. Jones logged an Ivy-best 13.0 tackles for loss and a Harvard-high 6.0 sacks, six quarterback hurries and three blocked kicks in 2022. For his career, Jones finished with 88 tackles, 28.5 tackles for loss and 14.5 sacks across 30 games.
 
Smith finished his career in Cambridge 12 months prior to Jones and earned his degree in 2022, before using his final season of eligibility at Notre Dame. The defensive lineman capped his career by earning 2021 All-Ivy League First-Team recognition after a senior campaign that saw him rack up 40 tackles, 5.0 TFL, 3.5 sacks, three QB hurries and a team-best two forced fumbles. The Detroit, Michigan native was a main cog in what is annually considered one of the top defensive units in the country. Smith completed his Harvard career with 72 tackles, 7.5 TFL and 5.5 sacks in 28 outings.
