HOW IT HAPPENED
- Harvard made its way back to Jordan Field this afternoon looking to bounce back and earn a win on its home turf in the 43rd matchup in series history against Cornell.
- The Crimson brought the pressure early, maintaining possession to create several quality chances deep in the attacking third. Cornell was quick on the counter and fired off three early shots, all of which were cleaned up by Rhiannon Stewart and the defense.
- Gunnlaugsdóttir was first to the net for the Crimson as the senior fired off two shots on net in the first 15 minutes but was denied by the Big Red defense. At the 19' minute mark after a Big Red foul deep in their defending third, Gunnlaugsdóttir stepped up to take the free kick. The Iceland native took a shot off the spot and rattled it in off the far post to score Harvard's first goal of the game.
- Just three minutes later, Anna Rayhill sprung another Harvard attack with a great run up the sideline. Rayhill put a perfect cross into the box that was redirected by Gunnlaugsdóttir right onto the foot of Josefine Hasbo who put her shot into the back of net to double the Crimson lead.
- Less than two minutes later, Audrey Francois netted the dagger and Harvard's third goal in just over four minutes. Francois slammed home the goal after Gunnlaugsdóttir put a perfect lob cross into the box.
- Rayhill and Gunnlaugsdóttir each recorded one more shot on goal in the first half but could not find the twine as the Crimson went into the halftime break with a commanding 3-0 lead.
- The second half started off slow as Cornell stacked the midfield to put the press on the Crimson defense. Harvard controlled possession on the backline and in the midfield, looking to break through the Big Red defense. Cornell had two shot opportunities fail after one shot sailed just high and the other was saved by the goalkeeper Stewart.
- Harvard finally broke through at the 65' mark, getting its fourth goal of the game from Nicola Golen. Golen chipped a shot just under the cross bar and into the back of the net after a great feed from Hasbo, who received a pass after a long run from Rose.
- 77' into the action, Harvard got its fifth and final tally of the contest from Írena Héðinsdóttir Gonzalez. The goal was set up off a corner kick from Gunnlaugsdóttir, who threaded in a ball that was flicked by Jade Rose and collected by Gonzalez just outside the box. Gonzalez used her left foot to float a shot over the Cornell keeper's head.
- Harvard would hold onto the lead in the remaining minutes to pick up a decisive 5-0 victory over Cornell.
