Women’s Soccer Set for Ivy League Showdown Against Princeton

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Harvard women's soccer will continue its Ivy League schedule this weekend with a matchup against the Princeton Tigers. The Crimson (5-2-5, 1-2-1 Ivy) will look to stay in the mix for an Ivy League Tournament spot against the Tigers (8-4-0, 3-1-0 Ivy) when the sides battle at Myslik Field at 1:00 PM on Saturday (Oct. 19) and on ESPN+.

The Crimson is coming into the contest off a 5-0 victory over the Cornell Big Red last Sunday (Oct. 9). The offensive outburst resulted in the Crimson's first win of the Ivy league season and gave the group three key points to keep it in the mix for the four-team Ivy League Tournament.

A Fight to the Finish

  • With only three games remaining in its regular season, the Crimson will look to keep its foot on the gas pedal when it faces the Princeton Tigers this weekend.
  • Harvard owns four points in the Ivy League standings and is currently slotted in fifth place in the conference. It is only one win behind Yale and Brown, which both own seven points and are tied for third place in the league.
  • Princeton, currently sitting at second place in the league, owns nine points on the year and a record of 3-1-0.

The Matchup

  • The Crimson and the Tigers will battle for the 49th time in series history on Saturday. Harvard owns the advantage in the all-time series with a 33-13-2 record. Harvard is unbeaten in its past three matchups against the Tigers with a 2-0-1 record.
  • This contest will also be a rematch of the 2023 Ivy League Tournament semifinals where Harvard defeated Princeton, 4-2, in one of the best games of the season for the group.
  • Four current student-athletes own points against Princeton, none more than senior captain Jade Rose, who has a goal and an assist in three career games against Princeton. Josefine Hasbo has also scored a goal, while August Hunter and Áslaug Gunnlaugsdóttir both own assists in their career against the Ivy League rival.

Flying High

  • Harvard comes into the weekend flying high off a huge victory over Cornell that helped the team improve its season record to 5-2-5. Earlier in the week, the team earned a 1-1 draw against the Dartmouth Big Green to earn another point in the Ivy League table.
  • The victory over the Big Red featured goals from five different athletes, Áslaug Gunnlaugsdóttir, Josefine Hasbo, Audrey Francois, Nicola Golen and Írena Héðinsdóttir Gonzalez. It was the most goals scored in a game this season and the sixth time in the past three seasons the team has put at least five goals on the board.

On a Tear

  • Senior forward Áslaug Gunnlaugsdóttir has been on quite the hot streak since her return from injury earlier this season. In just six games this season, the Iceland native has tallied four goals and three assists to total 11 points.
  • Gunnlaugsdóttir had a career game the last time out against Cornell, tallying a career best five points with a goal and three assists against the Big Red.
  • The senior is now second on the team with her 11 points on the season.

Back-to-Back for Francois

  • Junior forward Audrey Francois had a great week for the Crimson last week, getting on the score sheet in both contest against Dartmouth and Cornell.
  • The Canadian netted her first goal of the season, and the game-tying goal, in the second half against Dartmouth before potting another in Sunday's match against Cornell.
  • Francois also kept her streak of scoring against Cornell intact as she has now found the back of the net in all three career games against the Big Red.

Lock Down

  • Junior goalkeeper, Rhiannon Stewart, has been stellar between the posts all season long, anchoring the Crimson defense.
  • Stewart made three saves against the Big Red on her way to her Ivy League-leading fifth shutout.
  • The Englishwoman has started every game in goal for Harvard and has posted a .92 GAA and a .833 save percentage on the season.

Ironwomen on the Backline

  • August Hunter and Erin Gordon have played strong on the backline to help the Crimson in the defensive third this season.
  • Through 12 games played, both Hunter and Gordon have logged a combined 2,169 minutes on the pitch. Hunter has played every minute of every game for the Crimson, while Gordon has played all but 21 minutes in 2024.

Harvard Highlights

  • Josefine Hasbo is up to 14 points on the season and leads the team.
  • Hasbo and her fellow captain, Rose, both landed on the Top Drawer Soccer Midseason Top 100 list, coming in at No. 96 and no. 81, respectively.
  • First-year Erin Gordon landed on the Top Drawer Soccer Top 100 first-year list, coming in at No. 57 on the rankings after a strong start to her first collegiate season.
  • Rose currently ranks 54th in the nation and second in the Ivy League with .44 assists per game this season.
  • Nicola Golen scored her first goal of the season against Cornell and now ranks 20th in the nation with a shot accuracy clip of .636.
