BOSTON, Mass. – First-years
Justin Solovey and
Lucas St. Louis scored in the second period as the Crimson fell in the shootout to No. 3 Boston University. The Crimson finish the pre-season with a win over the U.S. NTDP and a shootout loss to the Terriers. Harvard has a week off before beginning ECAC play at home against Dartmouth.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Boston University appeared to strike first after capitalizing on a weird bounce in front, however, was blown dead due to a high stick right before the first TV timeout.
Ryan Fine had the best chance for the Crimson in the opening period after getting a breakaway with just under ten minutes to play in the opening frame. Left all alone, the sophomore put it just high over the bar.
Harvard got the first power-play of the game but was unable to capitalize late in the first after the Terriers were called for a cross-check. Getting another man advantage with just under 2:00 minutes left the Crimson had some good looks but came up with nothing.
Harvard led 11-6 in shots after the opening 20.
After a turnover in the natural zone,
Zakary Karpa pushed the puck ahead to
Justin Solovey who picked the right corner to give the Crimson a one goal lead. Solovey, who scored the game winner last night against the U.S NTDP has two goals in his last three periods of play.
After the Crimson took the lead, the Terriers pushed the pace and began to generate multiple great scoring opportunities but
Aku Koskenvuo stood tall and made numerous post to post stops.
Lucas St. Louis picked up a power-play marker after a good bump from
Mick Thompson to give the Crimson a two-goal lead.
Justin Solovey took a penalty late in the second frame that led to a Terrier goal to make it a 2-1 game heading into the third.
Aku Koskenvuo stood tall throughout the third after making 11 stops but ultimately the Terriers tied the game after a netting a breakaway goal to tie it at two.
Overtime solved nothing despite good chances on both sides as the Crimson took the No. 3 team in the country to a shootout.
Alex Gaffney scored in the first round of the shootout for the Crimson but BU added one to extend the game in the third frame and won the shootout after a goal in the fifth frame.
