CAMBRIDGE, Mass.– Men's hockey dropped its season opener to Dartmouth, 2-1, on Friday night despite a late push from the Crimson.
Aku Koskenvuo was solid in goal, while
Ben MacDonald netted the first goal of the season for Harvard.
HOW IT HAPPENED
In the opening minutes,
Mick Thompson had a prime scoring opportunity for Harvard after a neutral-zone turnover led to an odd-man rush. Thompson aimed for the top corner over Roan Clarke's glove, but Clarke came up with the save.
Dartmouth responded by scoring twice in under two minutes midway through the first period, first with a point-blank shot in the slot, then with a deflection to give Dartmouth a 2-0 lead.
Harvard's penalty kill kept Dartmouth from extending the lead after
Justin Solovey took a penalty in the first period.
Later, on a Harvard power play, Cameron Johnson was sprung loose, but Clarke denied him once again. The Crimson held an 18-14 advantage in shots midway through the second period.
Ben MacDonald capitalized on a pass from
Ryan Fine in the slot, scoring Harvard's first goal of the season on the power play, cutting the deficit to one. Harvard had two power-play opportunities in the second, finally converting with MacDonald's goal.
The third period remained highly physical, with Harvard unable to capitalize on a power-play opportunity. At 9:15 left,
Marek Hejduk was penalized, but a subsequent penalty on Dartmouth during the ensuing faceoff resulted in 4-on-4 play.
Despite several strong chances late in the third, Harvard was unable to score an equalizer to force overtime.
