Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Thompson Nets Overtime Winner to Lift Men's Hockey Over Princeton

PRINCETON, N.J. – Mick Thompson was the hero as the first-year scored his first career goal to give the Crimson a 4-3 overtime win over the Princeton Tigers at Hobey Baker Memorial Rink on Friday night. Harvard (1-1-0, 1-1-0 ECAC) picked up the extra point as it heads to Quinnipiac tomorrow for a meeting with the nationally ranked Bobcats.

HOW IT HAPPENED
A good breakout led to the first chance of the game for the Crimson after Joe Miller chipped it up to Philip Tresca, who muscled his way to the net and got a shot off, only for it to be swatted down by Ethan Pearson. Ben MacDonald got another crack at it after the puck was sitting just in front of the crease, but Pearson made another solid stop.

Princeton scored seconds after that to take a 1-0 lead after a Nick Marciano shot through traffic found the back of the net.

Ryan Healey was called for a high stick to send the Crimson to the kill for the first time in the evening. Despite being a man down, Harvard had the best looks within the two minutes after a two on one opportunity from Philip Tresca. Upon regaining the puck, the Tigers turned the puck over in their own zone after Zakary Karpa forced a turnover and fed Jack Bar in the slot for a grade-A scoring chance.

Harvard generated a lot of momentum after a very successful kill and controlled much of the play in the second half of the opening period. The Crimson was awarded its first power-play of the game after Koskenvuo was knocked over behind the net.  Despite numerous good chances from both units, the Crimson couldn't find the back of the net in the first.

Joe Miller opened an exciting second period after netting his first goal of the season. Jack Bar threw a puck on net from the side wall looking for a deflection where Ben MacDonald got a piece of it to deflect off of Pearson's pad and right onto Miller's stick for an easy goal to tie the game.

Less than a minute later Princeton scored to take a 2-1 lead after a shot beat Koskenvuo blocker side.

Down 2-1, the fourth line worked the puck up to the point where Kyle Aucoin put a shot on net and Salvatore Guzzo picked it up and potted his first career goal. The Old Tappen, N.J. native netted his first career goal in his home state to tie the game at two in the second period.

Lucas St. Louis was taken down in the corner just four minutes into the third period to give the Crimson a power-play. Working the puck around on the man advantage, Mick Thompson banked a shot off Casey Severo who was camped in front to give Harvard a third-period lead.

Princeton tied the game on a power-play of their own four minutes after the Severo goal to tie the game.

Harvard pushed in the final minutes of the game looking to pick up a regulation win but Pearson stood tall and helped the Tigers force OT.

With under a minute to go in the three-on-three overtime period, Mick Thompson picked up a loose puck on the half wall, walked into the slot, and picked the corner for his first career goal and the extra point.
