Men’s Soccer Battles No. 25 Penn, Falls 1-0

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Harvard University men's soccer and the University of Pennsylvania battled over the full 90 minutes, but the No. 25 Quakers took a 1-0 decision on Saturday afternoon at Jordan Field in the Crimson's Ivy League home opener.
 
The Crimson (1-4-3, 0-2-0 Ivy) pressured the nationally ranked Quakers (7-1-1, 2-0-0 Ivy) throughout the second half, including creating several dangerous chances in the final 30 minutes before the visitors held on for the win following a goal in the 58th minute.
 
As part of the day's events, the Crimson honored the program's 1984 team on the 40th anniversary of the group's appearance in the NCAA quarterfinals, while Harvard Athletics hosted a Day of Play fan festival with food trucks, fan prizes, lawn games, music, and a postgame autograph session.

How It Happened

  • In the first half, junior goalkeeper Lucian Wood made three saves, including strong stops in the ninth and 42nd minutes.
  • Sophomore Erik Dalaker nearly scored the game's opening goal as his header off a corner kick from junior Matus Vician carried just over the bar in the 35th minute.
  • Penn took a 1-0 lead in the 58th minute as Patrick Cayelli caused a turnover before Stas Korzeniowski slotted a shot into the net.
  • Harvard pressured Penn over the final half hour of the contest beginning with a dangerous corner from sophomore Andreas Savva in the 60th minute.
  • Savva then sent a shot off the outside of the left post in the 66th minute before Dalaker blasted a shot on net from outside the penalty area that required a diving save.
  • Junior Juho Ojanen almost equalized in the 81st minute as he ran onto a lofted ball inside the six-yard box before the keeper made a save.
