Women’s Soccer Tripped Up By Columbia

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Harvard women's soccer was stunned by its Ivy League foe, Columbia this afternoon in a rematch of the 2023 Ivy League Tournament Championship. The Crimson (4-2-4, 0-2-0 Ivy) fell to Columbia (4-3-3, 2-0-0 Ivy) after the Lions tacked on a late goal to escape Jordan Field with a 2-1 result.

Áslaug Gunnlaugsdóttir kept her hot streak intact with another goal, her third in the past three games, but it was not enough to lift the Crimson to the result.

How it Happened

  • The Crimson and the Lions met on the pitch at Jordan Field in a rematch of the 2023 Ivy League Tournament Championship game.
  • Rhiannon Stewart had her number called early, making a save in the third minute of action. Anna Rayhill also stepped up to make a great defensive play, rushing to make a goal line clearance and keep Columbia off the board in the opening minutes. After a hectic opening sequence, Harvard began to settle in and calm things down.
  • Nicola Golen recorded the first shot on goal for the Crimson 14' into the match but was stopped after a diving save from the Columbia keeper.
  • The Crimson defense kept answering the call, stepping up to make a number of key plays to keep the Lions at bay in the first half. Stewart made one more save and the back line of August Hunter, Sydney Farnham and Erin Gordon all aided the effort.
  • The sides went into the halftime break locked in a scoreless tie. The Lions held a 5-3 advantage in shots, but the Harvard defense was able to shut down all the Columbia chances.
  • Harvard had a quality scoring chance thwarted off a corner kick, when Josefine Hasbo was pushed off a shot and had the ball cleared off the line by a Columbia defender.
  • The Lions took a 1-0 lead at the 60' minute mark but it took the Crimson exactly one minute to equalize. Áslaug Gunnlaugsdóttir leveled the score at one with a left-footed strike inside the box.
  • The Lions took a late lead at the 87' mark after moving quickly on the counterattack.
  • Harvard was unable to find the late equalizer as the Lions escaped Cambridge with a 2-1 result over the Crimson.
