HANOVER, N.H. – Harvard women's soccer earned its first point in Ivy League play tonight after earning a 1-1 tie on the road against Dartmouth. The Crimson (4-2-5, 0-2-1 Ivy) pushed for the go-ahead goal late in the game but could not get past the Big Green (6-4-2, 0-2-1 Ivy) as the game ended in a draw. After conceding a goal late in the first half, the Crimson turned up the pressure down the stretch, dominating possession and controlling the pace for much of the second half action.
Audrey Francois netted the equalizer 74' into the action and the Crimson created several more scoring chances in the final minutes before the clock hit zero and ended the match that resulted in the team's fifth tie of the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Crimson and the Big Green met on the pitch at Burnham Field in Hanover tonight with Harvard looking for its fifth-straight win over the Big Green. The group was looking to bounce back and gain more points in Ivy League play with a result over Dartmouth.
- The tone of the first half was set after the first whistle, with both teams battling for control and trading short possessions in the early going. It was a physical affair as both teams worked to move the other off the ball in each defending third. The Crimson managed to get the first shot on target in the match, with Audrey Francois finding the net with a low shot that was snatched up by the Dartmouth keeper.
- Harvard created just a few more chances in the first half, one each from Josefine Hasbo, Nicola Golen and Áslaug Gunnlaugsdóttir, but was blanked by the Dartmouth defense.
- The Big Green countered with a few chances of its own in the early going but had all of its attempts thwarted by Crimson goalkeeper Rhiannon Stewart. The junior netminder made three saves in the first half to anchor the defensive effort.
- Despite a solid defensive showing from the Crimson, Dartmouth was able to sneak in a late first half goal to take a 1-0 lead going into the break.
- The first half was nearly even in the box score, with Dartmouth owning a slight advantage in shots, 7-6.
- After a trio of early second half saves from Rhiannon Stewart, the Crimson turned up the offensive pressure, looking to push the tempo and create chances in the attacking third.
- Gunnlaugsdóttir made the first two attempts on goal with a pair of shots that just sailed high and wide at the 70' and 73' marks in the contest.
- After Hasbo was fouled in the midfield, the Crimson was awarded a penalty kick from about 15 yards outside the box. Hasbo lined up to take the kick and put a bending cross inside the 18 that first found the head of a Dartmouth defender. Francois positioned herself underneath the deflection and fought off her defender enough to get her head on the ball and direct a shot into the back of the net for the equalizing strike.
- Harvard kept its foot on the gas pedal, as Erin Gordon, Írena Héðinsdóttir Gonzalez and Jasmine Leshnick all had quality looks on net either sail wide or get saved by Dartmouth in the next four minutes of action.
- The Crimson nearly had the game-winner with just six minutes left in the game when Gunnlaugsdóttir made a great touch on the ball to get control deep in the Dartmouth 18. The senior worked the ball onto her left foot and put a shot towards the net that just deflected over the crossbar.
- In the last ten seconds, the Crimson got a foul call and one final chance off a penalty kick from just past the midfield stripe. Leshnick took the kick and worked it forward quickly, putting a ball deep into the Dartmouth end. Anna Rayhill had the first chance on the ball, getting a head on the cross flicking the shot wide but in the direction of Jade Rose, who had a clear line on goal. Rose put a header on goal that was cleared off the line by a Dartmouth defender in the final second as the game ended in a 1-1 draw.
