Men’s Volleyball Drops Opening Match to Princeton

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Harvard men's volleyball (5-5, 2-1 EIVA) fell in the first match of the weekend against No. 14 Princeton (7-7, 1-2 EIVA), 0-3, this evening inside the Malkin Athletic Center.

How it Happened

The match between the two Ivy League schools proved to be a battle right from the start with a back-and-forth opening set.  Princeton pulled out to several small leads in the opening points but a 5-1 scoring run by the Crimson gave the squad a 16-13 lead.  Throughout the late moments of the set, Harvard battled through three set points before the Tigers eventually took the first set, 29-27.  Owen Fanning got started early, posting eight kills for a perfect hitting percentage in the set.

The Tigers used the second sets to grow their momentum.  Despite the Crimson starting strong, a large Princeton scoring run in the middle of the set pulled them out of reach.  Princeton ultimately went up 2-0 after taking the second set, 25-16.

Feeding off of a packed Malkin Athletic Center, the Crimson pressured the Tigers throughout the final set of the night.  While Princeton was the first to pull ahead, Harvard used another 5-1 scoring run to pull ahead 13-10.  While continuing to hold slight advantages for several more sequences, the Tigers were ultimately able to pull back in front and never lose the lead again to close out the match with a 25-23 third set decision.

Harvard Highlights

  • Midway through the second set, Owen Fanning had already accumulated double figure kills and did so with a perfect hitting percentage.  The junior ended with 14 total kills to lead the Crimson.
