Men’s Lacrosse Completes Seven-Goal Comeback in 13-12 Win Over Bucknell

WESTPORT, Conn. – Harvard men's lacrosse used a little fourth quarter magic today against Bucknell, pulling seven fourth quarter goals out of its hat to defeat the Bison, 13-12 in another exciting college lacrosse game. The Crimson (3-0, 0-0 Ivy) came back from a seven-goal deficit, sparked by three fourth quarter goals from Teddy Malone, to come away with a hard-earned victory.

Sam King collected another five points to lead the team, Collin Bergstrom caused two turnovers and Andrew DeGennaro won 13-of-22 faceoffs to lead the Crimson.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Harvard met Bucknell for the second straight season on Saturday. The teams competed in a neutral site battle hosted by Staples HS in Westport, Conn.
  • The Bison came out strong in the first quarter, using a 4-0 run to build a lead at the six-minute mark in the first quarter. Harvard had four shots blocked or saved in the stretch.
  • The Crimson got its first goal courtesy of Miles Botkiss by way of Sam King at the 2:56 mark in the first to get the Crimson going. Bucknell would tack one more goal onto its total late in the quarter to take a 5-1 lead into the second quarter.
  • Starting goalie, Christian Barnard, made three saves in the first quarter to limit the Bison.
  • Bucknell used another three-goal run in the quarter to build up an 8-1 lead, its biggest of the game and the largest deficit the Crimson has faced this season.
  • Harvard built a little momentum heading into the halftime break, scoring two goals in the final three-plus minutes. Sam King netted both tallies for the Crimson.
  • The Crimson made moves right out of the halftime break, getting a goal from Graham Blake under a minute in. The sides traded possessions for the next eight minutes, until Griffin Pokorny broke through the silence with an impressive drive and score.
  • The Bison answered back with two more goals to restore its five-goal lead at the four-minute mark in the third quarter. Teddy Malone broke through the Bison defense late in the action to get his first goal of the game and make the score 10-6 after 45 minutes.
  • The teams traded goals early in the final quarter before the Crimson went on an absolute tear in the final stretch. With the score at 11-7, Harvard went on to rattle off four straight goals in only three minutes of to tie the game. Lucas Hilsenrath got the Crimson started with his first of the game and was followed by Logan Ip, Pokorny and Botkiss. Andrew DeGennaro won all three faceoffs on the run to get the team moving.
  • Bucknell got its lead back – briefly – with its 12th and final goal at the 8-minute mark.
  • Ray Dearth answered quickly with a rip just 15 seconds after the Bucknell goal. Malone added his third – and the eventual game-winner – just 13 seconds later to give Harvard its first lead of the game at the seven-minute mark in the final quarter.
  • The Crimson forced two Bison turnovers and held the team to just two shots in the final eight minutes to seal the 13-12 win.
