CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Harvard men's hockey defeated Dartmouth in a seven-round shootout on Friday evening to pick up the extra point. Almost ten rounds shorter than the marathon on opening night,
Alex Gaffney scored to take the shootout and a crucial point in the ECAC standings.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Dartmouth scored a power play goal in the first two minutes of play, putting the Crimson in an early deficit. They came back and retaliated, however, with
Zakary Karpa scoring a goal just a few minutes later, his third of the season. He was assisted by
Joe Miller and
Alex Gaffney.
Later on in the period,
Cam Johnson scored his third goal of the season to hold a lead over Dartmouth.
During a power-play,
Ben MacDonald was able to score with just six seconds left in the advantage, tallying his fifth goal of the season and third on the power play. Just a few minutes later,
Marek Hejduk was able to breakaway and fire a shot past Cooper Black, his fifth of the season. Dartmouth netted three more goals in the second period, tying up the score at 4-4.
A few minutes into the third Gaffney scored a goal of his own, assisted by
Ryan Drkulec and
Jack Bar. Koskenvuo continued to make solid saves in this period, before letting one through the cracks, making the score an even 5-5 with just five minutes to go in the third.
Going into three-on-three play in overtime, both Harvard and Dartmouth had some quality chances, but were unlucky in resolving the tie, forcing the game into a shootout.
Dartmouth scored first, with Sean Chisolm getting the puck past Koskenvuo in the first round.
Ben MacDonald was able to get his free shot past Roan Clarke in the second, tying the shootout 1-1. Finally, in the seventh round, Gaffney was able to shoot a quick wrister past Clarke, winning the shootout and allowing the Crimson to grab the extra point.
