Game Recap: Men's Volleyball |

Men’s Volleyball Falls to No. 18 UC San Diego

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Harvard men's volleyball (9-6, 3-1 EIVA) dropped its opening match out west, falling to No. 18 UC San Diego, 3-1.

How it Happened

The Crimson started strong against the Tritons, pulling out to a 3-1 and a 5-2 lead early in the set.  A 3-0 scoring run brought the match back to a tie and ignited back and forth play throughout the next few points before the Tritons broke away for an 11-8 lead.  Beginning with a monster block from Ethan Smith and Logan Shepherd, the Crimson showed its fight, bringing the match back to even.  Throughout the set there were 10 ties, but a late 7-1 run by the Tritons created significant distance as the Crimson ultimately dropped the first, 25-21.

The second set started similarly as there were nine different ties throughout the first 20 points.  The 10-10 tie would be final of the set as the Tritons broke out on a 7-0 run.  Harvard was unable to recover from the deficit, eventually falling 25-16 to go down 2-0 in the match.

Harvard's fight never died as it looked to bounce back in the third.  Quickly the Crimson pulled away from the Tritons, running up the score to 13-6 off of several short scoring runs.  Up until set point at 24-14, the Crimson had not allowed UC San Diego to register two straight points at any moment in the set.  The Tritons fought off four set points before Zach Berty slammed home a kill to finish the job for the Crimson, 25-18.

The Crimson once again started fast, pulling out to a 6-1 lead as it looked to tie up the match.  Despite the Harvard momentum, the Tritons were able to respond with their own 6-0 scoring run.  Harvard was able to regain the lead a few more times in the set but following breaking the 12-12 tie, the Tritons never again lost their advantage, ultimately clinching the match with a 25-20 fourth set result.
