NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Harvard softball began its Ivy League schedule Saturday afternoon with a doubleheader at Yale. The Crimson came up short in both contests against the Bulldogs.
In game one, Yale jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning, as a Crimson rally in the seventh inning couldn't tie the game up. The day ended with Yale securing a 9-1 run-rule victory in game two.
HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME ONE:
Yale (5-14, 2-0 Ivy League) opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning, as the Bulldogs took the initial lead with a one-run RBI-single, 1-0. The hosts added another run, doubling its advantage with its second RBI-single of the frame, 2-0.
Coming out of the bullpen, sophomore pitcher
Riley Flynn kept Yale scoreless in four frames of work, as the Phoenix, Ariz. native struck out two Bulldogs while allowing only two hits.
Behind the lights out showing from Flynn, Harvard (9-9, 0-2) staged a rally in the top of the seventh. The Crimson started the frame strong, as junior outfielder
Savannah Fitzpatrick and senior infielder
Madi Mays lined back-to-back singles. With two runners on, first-year infielder
Sophie Sun hit into a double play, allowing Fitzpatrick to cut into the Yale lead, 2-1. Yale held on at the end to win the game, 2-1.
Harvard scored one run on four hits, as senior
Anna Reed got the start in the circle, pitching two innings while allowing two runs with two strikeouts.
HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME TWO:
The Harvard bats produced the opening run quickly, taking the lead in the top of the first. Senior outfielder
Lauren Bobowski worked a leadoff walk on a full count, as Sun logged a single in the next at-bat. Bobowski reached home a fielder choice's, 1-0.
In the bottom of the first, Yale equalized, recording the tying run on a double steal, 1-1.
The Bulldogs took the lead for the first time in the fourth inning, scoring two runs on a two-run home run to right field, 3-1. Yale added two more runs in the fourth on a throwing error and an RBI-single, 5-1.
