Harvard Hits Five Home Runs in Wins Against Tennessee Tech, Winthrop

ATLANTA, Ga. – At the first day of the Bob Heck Classic in Atlanta, Ga., Harvard's offense orchestrated stellar displays in victories against Tennessee Tech and Winthrop, hitting five home runs against the Golden Eagles and Eagles.

The Crimson began its time in Atlanta with a 5-3 win against Tennessee Tech, as home runs from juniors Savannah Fitzpatrick and Maya Douglas powered the Harvard offense in the victory.

In a 4-1 victory against Winthrop, Harvard overcame a one-run deficit in the sixth inning, as Alexa Wohr, Finley Payne, and Sophie Sun all hit home runs to propel the Crimson to the win.

Over seven games this season, Harvard is 6-1, the best start to a campaign since 2011.

HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME ONE:

After a scoreless first inning, Tennessee Tech (7-4) took the lead in its half of the second, as sophomore infielder Meaghan Houk hit a solo home run, 1-0.

In the next frame, Harvard (6-1) took a commanding lead, bringing in four runs in the third inning. Back-to-back hits from Sun and Payne set up a sacrifice bunt from Fitzpatrick, tying the game, 1-1. After senior outfielder Lauren Bobowski was hit by a pitch, Douglas sent the first pitch she saw to the stands, putting Harvard in front with a three-run home run, 4-1.

Tennessee Tech cut into the Harvard lead in the fourth inning, as Houk scored on a wild pitch, 4-2.

Fitzpatrick restored the Crimson's three-run lead in the fifth inning, crushing a ball to deep center field for her first career home run, 5-2. The sixth inning saw Tennessee Tech cut into the Harvard lead with an RBI-single from sophomore outfielder Jordan Key, 5-3.

The Crimson finished the contest with five runs on six hits, as Douglas and Fitzpatrick hit their first career home runs. Sophomore Riley Flynn picked up the win, recording 4.1 innings in the circle with three strikeouts, lowering her season earned run average to 0.47.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME TWO:

Winthrop (7-10) jumped to an early lead in the bottom of the first, as catcher Emma Jackson hit an RBI double, 1-0.

In the sixth inning, Harvard's offense exploded for three home runs, manufacturing four runs in the frame to take the lead. Senior infielder Madi Mays found a gap in right center, hitting a leadoff double. After taking the first pitch, Wohr put Harvard in the driver seat, lacing a two-run home run to deep left field, 2-1.

With two outs in the sixth and no one on base, Sun launched a ball past the left field wall, extending the Crimson lead with her second home run this season, 3-1. After a Winthrop pitching change, Payne connected on a pitch, hitting Harvard's third home run of the inning and her first home run this season.

In the circle, the Ivy League Rookie of the Week Nicolette Hunter got the start and the win, allowing only one run, one walk, and four hits across five innings. Junior Katie Arrambide earned a save, striking out three batters while not allowing a hit over two innings. The Crimson scored four runs on six hits.

HARVARD HIGHLIGHTS:
  • Douglas and Fitzpatrick hit their first career home runs in the 5-3 win against Tennessee Tech. Wohr recorded her first career home run against Winthrop.
  • Sun and Payne logged their second career home runs against Winthrop.
  • In the victory against, Payne lowered her ERA to 0.47, while Hunter leads Harvard in ERA this year with a mark of 0.42.
  • Arrambide recorded the fourth save of her career in the 4-1 win against Winthrop.

Harvard softball concludes its time at the Bob Heck Classic tomorrow with another doubleheader. Harvard faces off against Tennessee Tech at 9 a.m. and then plays Winthrop at 11:30 a.m.
