Baseball’s Comeback Falls Just Short in Series Finale at Columbia, 6-4

NEW YORK – Senior Ben Rounds hit a three-run double, and first-year right-hander Will Burns allowed just one run over 3.2 innings of relief, but Harvard University baseball fell to Columbia University, 6-4, on Sunday afternoon at Robertson Field at Satow Stadium.
 
In the series finale of a three-game set to open Ivy League play, the Crimson (3-13, 1-2 Ivy) scored four runs in the fifth to pull within 5-4 before the host Lions (6-12, 2-1 Ivy) held on to take the decision after the two teams split a doubleheader on Friday.
 
Rounds tallied three RBIs, a double, and a run scored. He totaled three doubles and a home run in the three-game series and has reached base safely in all 16 of the Crimson's games in 2024. Burns threw a season-high 3.2 innings in relief, permitting one run on two hits and two walks with one strikeout. 

Harvard Highlights

  • Senior Ben Rounds tallied three RBIs, a double, and a run scored. Rounds totaled three doubles and a home run in the three-game series. He has reached base safely in all 16 of the Crimson's games in 2024.
  • First-year right-hander Will Burns tossed a season-high 3.2 innings in relief, permitting one run on two hits and two walks with one strikeout. He did not give up a hit over the fifth, sixth, or seventh innings.
  • Junior Matt Giberti posted a hit, a run, and a stolen base. He improved to 10-for-10 on stolen base attempts on the season.
  • Sophomore Max Lane notched a hit, a run, and a walk.
  • Junior George Cooper added a hit, senior Chris Snopek scored a run, and senior Peter Messervy and first-year Tyler Shulman each worked a walk.
  • First-year right-hander Truman Pauley threw 4.0 innings in the start, allowing five runs – all earned – on six hits and three walks with one strikeout.
  • For the series, Harvard's pitching staff posted a 3.91 ERA and limited the Lions to a .194 opponent batting average.

How It Happened

  • The Lions opened the game's scoring with three runs in the bottom of the first including a solo home run to plate the contest's first run.
  • Columbia scored twice in the last of the second on a two-run double to move ahead 5-0.
  • The Crimson rallied with four runs in the top of the fifth to pull within 5-4 with a bases-clearing double from Rounds highlighting the frame. After Shulman walked, Lane and Giberti each singled to load the bases. Rounds then laced a three-run double down the left field line to make the score 5-3. Rounds later scored on a wild pitch to trim the margin to 5-4.
  • Burns did not allow a run in the fifth, sixth, or seventh frames before the Lions added a run on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth to move their margin to 6-4.
