Sailing Posts Two Top-5 Performances in Tough Conditions

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Harvard Sailing endured tough weather conditions this past weekend and still managed to record a pair of top-5 efforts on the water in New England. The Crimson came in third place at the Duplin Trophy Women's Team Race in Cambridge and finished fourth at the Friis Trophy Team Race in Bristol, Rhode Island.

Duplin Trophy Women's Team Race | Cambridge, Mass.

A race hosted by Tufts, but held out of Harvard Sailing Center, the Crimson finished tied with Boston College for the second-best record (8-4), but settled for third after going 0-2 vs. the Eagles. Day 1 featured good racing in bad weather, with winds coming out of the east, east-northeast, and north. Day 2 weather, meanwhile, limited sailors to an abbreviated session, with time for only a top- and middle-4 second round. The Harvard skippers were Cordelia Burn, Sarah Burn and Zoey Ziskind, with the crew consisting of Emily Launderville, Lily Bartlett and Margo Silliman. The Crimson wedged victories over Bowdoin (1-3-5), Brown (1-3-5), MIT (1-2-4), Tufts (1-2-4), Tulane (1-3-4), Rhode Island (1-2-3) and South Florida (1-2-3) in between losses to BC (3-5-6) and Yale (3-4-6). In Gold Round 2, Harvard fell to Yale (3-4-5) and Boston College (1-5-6), before finishing with a 2-3-4 decision over MIT.

Friis Trophy Team Race | Bristol, R.I.

Conditions in The Ocean State were tough over the weekend. Saturday featured winds in the high teens to start and they tapered off some as the day went on. The rain, however, was continuous all day. Sailors did their best to navigate the obstacles, with most teams getting in nine races before the expected 40 mph winds swept through. Sunday's action was canceled due to freezing wind chill and a big breeze. All that said, the Crimson group that braved the conditions were skippers Robby Meek, Lachlain McGranahan, Justin Callahan and Mitchell Callahan, with Marbella Marlo, Xavier Ayala-Vermont, Matthew Cabot, Aidan Pesce, Kennedy Leehealey and JJ Drummond serving as crew. Harvard finished in a three-way tie for third (Tufts, U.S. Coast Guard) after going 5-4, but finished in fourth after falling to the Jumbos (3-5-6) and defeating Bears (1-2-6). In addition to the aforementioned results, the Crimson picked up wins over Stanford (2-3-4), Roger Williams (1-2-3), MIT (1-2-3) and Rhode Island (1-2-5). Its losses were to Yale (1-4-6), Brown (4-5-6) and BC (2-4-5).

Up Next

Harvard will compete in Cambridge at MIT's Marchiando Trophy Team Race and at Brown's Dellenbaugh Trophy Women's Team Race in Providence, Rhode Island. The regattas are slated for Saturday, March 30-Sunday, March 31.
