CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – No. 13 Harvard men's tennis (20-6, 6-1 Ivy) defeated No. 27 Princeton (22-7, 5-2 Ivy) in a thrilling 4-3 match to clinch its third consecutive Ivy title and 33
rd in program history.
How it Happened
The Crimson opened the match by picking up the doubles point in what would be a crucial point. Harvard and Princeton traded the first two doubles matches as
Masato Perera and
Alan Yim cruised to a 6-1 victory at the No. 3 spot and the Tigers took the No. 1 position match. Shortly after,
Melchior Delloye and
Ronan Jachuck downed Landon Ardila and Fun Nidunjianzan (Princeton) to move up 1-0.
Moving into singles, the Tigers were able to pull into the lead, taking wins at the No. 4 and 1 positions. Despite falling behind,
Henry von der Schulenburg brought the match back to even, dropping Fnu Nidunjianzan (Princeton) in straight sets, 6-4, 7-6 (4).
Masato Perera then pulled off a come from behind victory to regain the Crimson lead. After winning the first set 6-2, the sophomore battled back in the second to win in tiebreakers, 7-6 (1) and put Harvard up, 3-2.
With a Tigers win at the No. 3 spot, the match came down to a three-set thriller at the No. 5 position. After narrowly falling, 6-7 (3), in the first set
Rohan Murali was able to even the score with a 7-5 second set decision. As the only match remaining, Murali cruised to a 6-3 final set to secure the match and the Ivy title for the Crimson.
Harvard Highlights
- With the win, the Crimson clinched a share of the 2024 Ivy title, marking its third consecutive championship and the 33rd in Harvard men's tennis history.
- Teaming up for just the second time this season, Delloye and Jachuck provided the doubles clinching win by downing Landon Ardila and Fnu Nidunjianzan (Princeton), 6-4
- von der Schulenburg improved to a strong 12-4 in dual action with his straight set victory at the No. 2 spot.
- With his clinching victory against the Tigers, Rohan Murali completed an undefeated weekend and improved to 9-6 on the year.
- The Crimson extends its lead in the all-time series over the Tigers to 62-46, including having won the last eight straight match ups.
