Baseball’s Comeback Falls Just Short in Series Opener at Cornell, 5-4

ITHACA, N.Y. – Junior George Cooper tallied two hits and two RBIs, and first-year right-hander Truman Pauley threw 3.0 innings of scoreless relief, but Harvard University baseball fell to Cornell University, 5-4, on Saturday afternoon at Booth Field in the series opener of a three-game set.
 
Facing a 4-0 deficit, the Crimson (4-18, 2-5 Ivy) tied the score at 4-4 with one run in the fourth and three runs in the fifth before the Big Red (7-11, 5-2 Ivy) plated a run in the bottom of the fifth to take the decision.
 
Cooper went 2-for-3 on the day with two RBIs and a double while junior Matt Giberti stole two bases in the game to improve to 13-for-13 on stolen bases on the season. Pauley tossed 3.0 innings in relief, allowing no runs on no hits and no walks with three strikeouts.
 
Officials altered the weekend's schedule slightly due to weather with the series beginning with a single game on Saturday. The two teams will close the series with a doubleheader tomorrow starting at 11:30 a.m. (ESPN+).

  • Junior left fielder George Cooper went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a double.
  • Junior center fielder Matt Giberti tallied two runs scored, two stolen bases, and a walk. He improved to 13-for-13 on stolen bases on the season.
  • Junior Sawyer Feller hit a pinch-hit, RBI double.
  • Sophomore designated hitter Callan Fang notched a hit, run, and walk.
  • Sophomore Jordan Kang added an RBI, junior William Lybrook scored a run, and first-year Tyler Shulman contributed a hit.
  • First-year right-hander Truman Pauley tossed 3.0 scoreless innings in relief, permitting no runs on no hits and no walks with three strikeouts. He registered his first scoreless outing of the season.
  • In his first collegiate start, first-year right-hander Will Burns threw 5.0 innings, allowing five runs – all earned – on six hits and three walks with two strikeouts. 

How It Happened

  • The Big Red opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first, including a solo home run.
  • Cornell added a two-run home run in the last of the second to move ahead 4-0.
  • The Crimson countered with a run in the top of the fourth behind an RBI double from Cooper. After Giberti led off the frame with a walk and stole second base, Cooper laced an RBI double down the left field line.
  • Harvard tied the game at 4-4 with three runs in the top of the fifth. Feller started the inning's scoring with a pinch-hit, RBI double to right field before Kang plated a run with a ground ball. After Giberti reached and stole second, Cooper brought him home with an RBI single to center field to cap the frame's scoring.
  • Cornell re-took a 5-4 edge with a run in the bottom of the fifth.
  • Pauley did not allow a base runner to reach second base over the sixth, seventh, or eighth frames before the hosts held on for the decision.
