Baseball Beats Massachusetts in The Beanpot, 10-3

BRIGHTON, Mass. – Junior left-hander Brian Dowling permitted just two runs over 6.0 innings in the start, sophomore Jordan Kang tallied a career-high four hits, and Harvard University baseball beat the University of Massachusetts, 10-3, on Tuesday afternoon in the third-place game of The Baseball Beanpot.
 
Playing a neutral-site contest at Boston College's Eddie Pellagrini Diamond at the Harrington Athletics Village, the Crimson (6-19) took a 4-0 lead in the fourth and led the rest of the way en route to the victory over the Minutemen (9-18).
 
On the mound, Dowling threw a career-high 6.0 innings in his first collegiate win, allowing two runs – both earned – on five hits and no walks with four strikeouts while first-year right-hander Truman Pauley tossed 2.0 innings in relief, giving up no runs on no hits and one walk with a career-best five strikeouts. Senior left-hander Uday Narottam struck out the side in the bottom of the ninth.
 
At the plate, the Crimson scored double-figure runs for the fourth time this year and totaled 12 hits, marking the sixth time in the last seven games that Harvard has posted double-figure hits. Five members of the Crimson registered multi-hit games, including Kang (4-for-5, three runs), senior Ben Rounds (2-for-5, two RBIs), first-year Jack Rickheim (2-for-5, two RBIs), junior George Cooper (2-for-5, two runs), and senior Jake Berger (2-for-4, two runs).

Harvard Highlights

  • Sophomore Jordan Kang went 4-for-5 with three runs, a double, and an RBI. He registered a career-high four hits in the game.
  • Senior Ben Rounds posted a 2-for-5 effort with two RBIs, a double, a run, and a walk. He has reached base safely in 24 of the Crimson's 25 games in 2024.
  • First-year Jack Rickheim finished 2-for-5 with two RBIs and a run.
  • Junior George Cooper compiled a 2-for-5 day with two runs and a walk.
  • Senior Jake Berger went 2-for-4 with two runs, a double, and a walk.
  • Junior Peter Levin posted two RBIs and a run, and senior Peter Messervy and junior Sawyer Feller each added an RBI.
  • Sophomore left-hander Brian Dowling threw a career-high 6.0 innings in the start, allowing two runs – both earned – on five hits and no walks with four strikeouts. He recorded his first career win.

How It Happened

  • The Crimson opened the game's scoring with four runs in the top of the fourth. Feller started the frame's scoring with a sacrifice fly to left field before Kang hit an RBI single through the left side. Levin capped the stanza's scoring with a ground ball that brought home two following an error.
  • In the bottom of the fifth, the Minuteman hit a two-run home run to right field to pull within 4-2.
  • Harvard pushed its advantage back to four runs at 6-2 with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth. A ground ball from Messervy allowed the first run to score prior to an RBI single through the left side from Rickheim.
  • Rounds drove a two-run double to center field to extend the Crimson's edge to 8-2 in the top of the eighth.
  • The Crimson plated another two runs in the top of the ninth to move ahead 10-2. Messervy worked a bases loaded walk before Rickheim absorbed a hit by pitch with the bases loaded.
  • UMass scored once in the bottom of the ninth for the game's final run.
