Women’s Soccer Sprints Past UW-Milwaukee in 4-2 Victory

MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The Harvard women's soccer team remains unbeaten in 2024 after the team used a second-half surge to sprint past the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in a 4-2 victory. The Crimson (4-0-2, 0-0-0 Ivy) got its goals from Jade Rose, Josefine Hasbo and Lauren Muniz as the team earned the win over the Panthers (1-6-0, 0-0-0 Horizon) on their home turf.

Rose was especially brilliant in the contest, collecting a career-high four points with a goal and two assists. Hasbo recorded her fourth-career multi-goal game and her ninth career game-winning goal to help the Crimson add another check in the win column.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Crimson and the Panthers met for just the second time in series history tonight in Milwaukee as the Crimson was looking to expand on its strong start to the 2024 season.
  • Starting goalkeeper, Rhiannon Stewart, got her number called early, stepping up to make three saves in the first 15 minutes of action.
  • Harvard's first shot attempt came 11' into the match off the foot of Anna Rayhill, who fired a shot from outside the 18 wide of the framework.
  • After the 25' mark, the Crimson began to move into the attacking third, creating a handful of scoring chances. Jasmine Leshnick and Jade Rose each used great runs to create solid looks deep in the Milwaukee zone.
  • The Panthers would strike first 30' into the contest to take a 1-0 lead.
  • Harvard responded well to its first deficit of the season, immediately taking control of the contest and creating two corner kick opportunities in the following three minutes.
  • Jade Rose equalized for Harvard with a beautiful goal from deep outside the 18 on the right side of the field. Rose first used a nifty move to break away from a defender before bending a shot around the Milwaukee keeper and into the net. Her first goal of the season helped Harvard tie the game 33' into the action.
  • Lauren Muniz had two great looks on goal turned aside in the next ten minutes as the Crimson and the Panthers went into the halftime break level at one goal apiece.
  • Stewart stepped up to make the first save of the second half, just 30 seconds into the second frame. After Stewart's fifth save it was all Crimson, as the team would go on to record the next five shots of the contest.
  • August Hunter had a great look at the top of the 18 stopped before Nicola Golen came up short on two solid scoring looks.
  • The Crimson finally broke through at the 63' mark when Jade Rose completed another stellar run up the right side before putting a perfect cross right onto the boot of Josefine Hasbo. Hasbo collected and put a shot into the bottom left corner of the net to put the Crimson up, 2-1.
  • Áslaug Gunnlaugsdóttir appeared in her first game since 2022 tonight for the Crimson and made an immediate impact for her team. 70' into the matchup, Gunnlaugsdóttir drove down the field and was fouled in the box to give Harvard a penalty kick for the second straight contest. The Crimson elected Hasbo to take the penalty and the senior captain did not disappoint. Hasbo beat the keeper to the right side, putting Harvard up, 3-1 with her second PK goal in as many games.
  • Less than four minutes later, Rose made another great run into the attacking third before putting a cross into the area that was slammed home by Lauren Muniz. The first-year's second goal of the season put the Crimson up 4-1 with just 12 minutes left in the contest.
  • The Panthers would pick up one more goal on the night at the 87' mark but it was too late to overcome the Crimson's second half surge as Harvard came away with its fourth win of the season.
