MacNeil Posts Shutout, Men’s Soccer Ties with Northeastern, 0-0

BROOKLINE, Mass. – Junior goalkeeper Cullen MacNeil made a season-high five saves in the Crimson's first shutout as a team this season as Harvard University men's soccer tied with Northeastern University, 0-0, on Thursday night at Parsons Field.
 
In the third match of a five-game road swing, the Crimson (0-1-3) did not allow the host Huskies (1-3-3) to break through, including a critical, point-blank stop from MacNeil in the 87th minute.
 
MacNeil tallied his first clean sheet of the season and third of his career.

Harvard Highlights

  • Junior goalkeeper Cullen MacNeil made a season and game-high five saves in the shutout, marking his first shutout of the season and third shutout of his career.
  • The Crimson's defensive unit of senior center backs Jan Riecke and Ludovico Rollo, junior outside backs Zachary Sardi-Santos and Rustin Khosravi, and senior defensive midfielder Sam Bjarnason all played the full 90 minutes to help Harvard posts its first clean sheet as a team in 2024.
  • Sardi-Santos posted game highs in shots (three) and shots on goal (two).
  • Harvard narrowly trailed Northeastern in shots (11-10). The Crimson held a 7-5 edge in shots in the first half. 

How It Happened

  • The Crimson held a 7-5 advantage in shots in the first half with each side registering two shots on goal in the opening 45 minutes.
  • Senior Marko Isakovic sent a free kick off the right post in the 17th minute while senior Kristján Gunnarsson and junior Zachary Sardi-Santos tested the keeper with shots on goal in the 21st and 42nd minutes.
  • Junior goalkeeper Cullen MacNeil made a pair of saves in the first half, including a diving stop in the 29th minute.
  • MacNeil denied all three of Northeastern's shots on goal in the second half.
  • In the 70th minute, MacNeil came off his line to stymie an attempt from the Huskies, and in the 87th minute, he made a point-blank save on a header attempt to keep the scoreline level.
  • In the second half, sophomore Andreas Savva played multiple balls into the box to create scoring opportunities, including on a dangerous free kick in the 85th minute.
