BURLINGTON, Vt. – The Crimson remained within one goal of the Catamounts until the 52
nd minute and within two goals until the 88
th minute, but Harvard University men's soccer fell at the University of Vermont, 5-0, on Saturday night at Virtue Field.
Competing in the fourth match of a five-game road swing, the Crimson (0-2-3) kept within 1-0 of the Catamounts (4-1-2) at halftime and remained within striking distance at 2-0 until the hosts netted three goals inside of the final three minutes.
Vermont netted the game's opening goal late in the first half in the 44
th minute before moving ahead 2-0 in the 52
nd minute. The hosts then closed the game's scoring with two goals in the 88
th minute and a final tally in the 89
th minute.
Harvard Highlights
- Sophomore Andreas Savva tallied game highs in shots (three) and shots on goal (two).
- Among the Crimson's field players, senior Jan Riecke, senior Ludovico Rollo, and sophomore Erik Dalaker all played the full 90 minutes.
- Harvard tallied 10 shots in the match and has now posted double-figure shots in four of five games on the season.
- The Crimson matched the Catamounts in corner kicks (3-3), while trailing narrowly in shots (12-10) and shots on goal (5-3).
How It Happened
- The Crimson generated an early chance in the sixth minute as senior Marko Isakovic played a dangerous free kick into the box where sophomore Erik Dalaker blasted a shot off the left post.
- The Catamounts netted the game's opening goal in the 44th minute. After David Ismail carried the ball into the attacking third, he played a centering pass to Marcell Papp who scored at the 43:26 mark.
- Harvard held a 2-1 edge in corner kicks in the first half while Vermont led 7-4 in shots. Each side tallied one shot on goal in the opening 45 minutes.
- Vermont went ahead 2-0 in the 52nd minute as Sydney Wathuta lofted a shot from the left wing into the side netting along the back post.
- The Crimson countered with chances in the 61st and 66th minutes as junior Nicholas Nyquist sent a header on target following a ball from Isakovic and sophomore Andreas Savva blasted a knuckling shot on goal.
- Isakovic pressured UVM with a pair of threatening free kicks inside of the final quarter hour with the first requiring a punch away and the second traveling just over the bar.
- The hosts closed the game's scoring with three tallies inside of the final three minutes with goals from Marcell Papp (87:26), Maximilian Kissel (87:47), and Nash Barlow (88:37).
