HOW IT HAPPENED
- Harvard and Brown renewed its long-standing rivalry tonight in Providence, writing the chapter no. 59 in the storied history between the two programs.
- The match was the first in Ivy League play for both Harvard, the reigning Ivy League Tournament Champion, and Brown, the reigning Ivy League regular season champion.
- The game got off to a slow start as neither team was able to record a shot on goal in the first 20 minutes of action. Each team had a number of quality looks but were not able to convert as the game stayed scoreless in the early going.
- Harvard was able to win three corner kicks, creating a few scoring opportunities off set pieces but couldn't put any shots on net.
- Rhiannon Stewart continued her strong play in the first half, making a sprawling save 31' into the action to put a stop to a Bears counter attack. Stewart made two more great plays on the ball in the half to keep Brown at bay.
- Despite the strong play of Stewart and the defense, Brown was able to sneak in a goal off corner kick set piece to take a 1-0 lead at the 38' mark.
- Harvard went into the half trailing, 0-1, to Brown. The Bears led in shots, 2-1, when the teams went to the sidelines for the break.
- The Crimson leveled the score just six minutes into the second half after Írena Héðinsdóttir Gonzalez fed a great ball through the defense towards a charging Anna Rayhill. Rayhill beat the keeper to the ball, putting a shot into the back of the net to get the equalizer.
- Brown nearly went ahead just a minute later but was called offside to keep the score level.
- Harvard relied on its defense in the next series of possessions, getting key sweeps from defenders, August Hunter, Erin Gordon and Sydney Farnham. Stewart continued to make incredible plays, the best coming at the 76' mark where she made a diving save to keep the Bears off the board.
- Brown added its second goal of the game 78' into the action to take a 2-1 lead over the Crimson.
- Harvard did not shy away, as the team kept pushing looking for the late equalizer. The Crimson created three quality chances in the final two minutes, including two corner kicks but could not find the equalizer.
- The Bears held on to escape with a 2-1 result over the Crimson.
