Isakovic Converts Penalty, Men’s Soccer Battles in 1-1 Draw at Rhode Island

KINGSTON, R.I. – Senior Marko Isakovic converted a penalty kick in the 36th minute as Harvard University men's soccer battled the University of Rhode Island in a 1-1 draw on Thursday night at the URI Soccer Complex.
 
Playing in its first road game of the season and beginning a five-game road swing, the Crimson (0-0-2) drew level with the Rams (3-0-1) late in the first half and became the first team to score a goal on Rhode Island this season.
 
After Rhode Island opened the scoring in the seventh minute, Harvard answered for the second straight match to begin the year as Isakovic drove his penalty into the right side of the goal at the 35:56 mark. Harvard also scored an equalizing goal in a season-opening 1-1 draw against Holy Cross on Aug. 31.

Harvard Highlights

  • Senior Marko Isakovic scored his first goal of the season and netted the second goal of his career. He now has 14 career points, including 10 career assists. Isakovic improved to 1-for-1 on penalty kicks in his collegiate career.
  • Junior goalkeeper Cullen MacNeil tallied four saves – including three saves in the second half. MacNeil played for the first time since Oct. 18, 2022 after missing the 2023 season due to injury.
  • Senior defender Jan Riecke made his 52nd straight start, playing the full 90 minutes.
  • Junior forward Nicholas Nyquist notched a game-high three shots on goal.
  • For the match, Harvard narrowly trailed URI in shots (15-12), shots on goal (5-4), and corner kicks (7-6).
 

How It Happened

  • Harvard generated the game's first scoring chance in the second minute as senior Jan Riecke sent a header off the crossbar following a free kick from sophomore Ben Kelly.
  • Rhode Island netted the game's first goal at the 6:57 mark as Joan Sanchis scored off an assist from Keegan Walker on a corner kick.
  • The Crimson responded in the 36th minute as senior Marko Isakovic stepped to the penalty spot and drove a shot into the right side of the net for his first goal of the season and second of his career.
  • Junior goalkeeper Cullen MacNeil made three of his four saves in the second half, including a sure-handed stop on a shot in the 52nd minute and an extended save in the 69th minute.
  • The Crimson continued to attack the Rams in the latter stages of the match with junior Nicholas Nyquist blasting a shot on target in the 78th minute and nearly beating the keeper with a shot following a corner in the 82nd minute.
