WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Harvard field hockey kicked off the 2024 season with a stellar offensive display, as the No. 8 ranked Crimson defeated William & Mary, 6-0, on the road.
The Crimson controlled the tempo and pace throughout the entirety of the match, out shooting the hosts, 26-1, as 23 of Harvard's shots were on goal.
After scoring six goals in five matches to end the 2023 season, sophomore midfielder
Lara Beekhuis netted the Crimson's first goal of the 2024 campaign. In her collegiate debut, first-year forward
Emily Bronckers scored a pair of goals. Senior forward
Lucy Leel, junior defender
Bronte-May Brough, and senior forward
Sara Silarszka all recorded goals in the second half.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Crimson (1-0, 0-0 Ivy League) offense got rolling early in the contest, producing the opening goal just four minutes into the season opener. A clever pass on the edge of the circle from junior midfielder
Fiene Oerlemans found Beekhuis in front of goal, as the 2023 Ivy League Tournament Most Outstanding Player put the Crimson in front, 1-0. With time winding down in the first period, Bronckers opened her collegiate account, scoring the first goal of her Crimson career to double the lead, 2-0.
Just 30 seconds into the second period, the Harvard attack stuck again. Oerlemans controlled the ball on the edge of the circle, as she fired an acrobatic pass across goal, as Bronckers guided the pass past the Tribe (0-3, 0-0 CAA) goalie for the second goal of the afternoon, 3-0.
Heading into halftime, Harvard held a 3-0 advantage against William & Mary, as the Crimson fired off 10 shots and limited the hosts to zero shots over the first 30 minutes of the contest.
An effective Harvard press produced the fourth Crimson goal of the match in the third period. Senior forward
Megan Joel won possession in the attacking half just two minutes into the second half, as a powerful shot from Leel flew past the Tribe goalie, 4-0. In the third and fourth quarters, Brough and Silarszka wrapped up the Crimson scoring with goals, 6-0.
Harvard was stellar on both sides, as the offense recorded 26 shots and 23 shots on goal. The Crimson defense limited William & Mary to one shot, posting the first shutout of 2024.

- Harvard has now won eight straight season openers, posting a record of 10-2 in the first game of the season during head coach Tjerk van Herwaarden's tenure.

- Oerlemans recorded multiple assists in a match for the for the first time in her Crimson career.
