HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Harvard Crimson and the No. 20 Pepperdine Waves competed against one another for the second straight season today at Jordan Field. The sides battled to a 1-1 draw a year ago out in Malibu, Calif. during the first meeting in the series history.
- Pepperdine set the tone early in the contest, creating the first shot of the game that was cleaned up by Rhiannon Stewart. The Waves got two corner kicks and had another shot find the net in the first ten minutes, but Stewart was once again up to the task.
- After the second Stewart save, Harvard worked quick on the counter getting its first shot on goal from August Hunter off a great feed from Jasmine Leshnick. Hunter's shot found the mitts of the keeper, who kept Harvard off the board 11' into the match.
- The next ten minutes saw the teams go back and forth alternating shots. The goalkeepers continued their strong play to keep the score level at zero. Stewart tied her career high with four saves after just 18' of action and Audrey Francois and Anna Rayhill recorded the shots for the Crimson in the sequence.
- After the first 20 minutes, the Harvard defense began to take control of the game, stifling the Waves forwards for the remainder of the half.
- Anya Van Den Einde, Leshnick and Susie Long all recorded shots for the Crimson but could not find the twine as the sides went into the halftime break in a 0-0 tie.
- The Crimson maintained control in the second half, holding off the Waves attack while creating more scoring chances in the opening 20 minutes of the half. Nicola Golen and Írena Héðinsdóttir Gonzalez both had shots turned aside as the scoreless tied remained.
- Harvard finally broke through 77' into the action when Audrey Francois drew a foul in the box to give Harvard a penalty kick chance. Josefine Hasbo took the PK and buried it into the back of the net to give Harvard the lead.
- Pepperdine found its equalizer just five minutes later when Megan Edelman scored a goal from outside the box that just narrowly skipped over the outstretched gloves of Stewart.
- The Waves tally ended a 441 minute scoreless run for Harvard and was the first goal conceded by the Crimson this season.
- Stewart would be called on to make one more save in the final minute of the contest as the game finished in a 1-1 draw.
- Harvard remained unbeaten with the result that put the team at 3-0-2 on the year.
