CAMBRIGE, Mass. – Harvard fencing was well represented across globe at several key international tournaments this weekend, as several Crimson earned several top-50 performances at Grand Prixs and World Cups hosted abroad.
At the Women's Foil World Cup in Hong Kong, senior and team captain
Lauren Scruggs earned more hardware with Team USA, propelling the Americans to a silver medal in the team competition. At the 2024 Paris Olympics last summer, Scruggs anchored an American side that won the nation's first ever Olympic gold medal in a fencing team event. Scruggs also featured in the individual event at the Women's Foil World Cup, taking ninth place.
Along with Scruggs, defending NCAA Women's Foil National Champion
Jessica Zi Jia Guo also represented the Crimson in both the team and individual tournaments at the Women's Foil World Cup, finishing in 10
th place in the individual event. Guo also led the Canadians to a fourth-place finish in the team event.
A pair of Crimson saber fencers earned top-50 performances at the Saber Grand Prix in Tunis, Tunisia as well. In the Grand Prix appearance of her fencing career, junior
Chloe Williams impressed, finishing in 46
th place after winning four bouts with a +7-touch differential in pool play. On the men's side, 2024 Pairs Olympian and Crimson first-year
Colin Heathcock finished in 17
th place, defeating Hong Kong's Tin Ching Leung in the round of 64 to secure the honor.
The Men's Foil World Cup in Paris, France saw two Crimson take part in the individual competition. First-Year
Andrew Chen finished in 93
rd place, while 2024 USFCA All-America First Team honoree and sophomore
Daniel Zhang took 162
nd.
Harvard returns to collegiate action this weekend, traveling to the Empire State for the highly anticipated St. John's Invitational on Sunday, Jan. 19.
