TROY, N.Y. –
Mick Thompson scored twice and
Aku Koskenvuo made 33 saves in a 5-2 win over RPI on Friday night. The team improves to 5-4-2 in conference play this season and will look to win its fourth straight ECAC game tomorrow against Union.
HOW IT HAPPENED
In the first meeting of the year between the Engineers and Crimson, both teams struggled to create any dangerous scoring opportunities in the first ten minutes of action. Trying to establish the pace of play, the Crimson began to find its legs right after
Aku Koskenvuo made a nice stop on a partial break for RPI.
Five minutes later,
Ian Moore started the breakout from the Crimson end and found
Justin Solovey on a stretch pass as the first-year entered the Engineers' end. Leaving the puck for
Zakary Karpa, who was trailing, the captain found Moore, who was flying into the slot and picked the corner for the 1-0 lead.
Sean Keohane was called for elbowing near the end of the first period to bring the PK unit out for the first time on the road trip.
Starting with an RPI turnover caused by
Casey Severo,
Mason Langenbrunner and
Mick Thompson went up the ice on a two-on-one short-handed. Leaving it for Thompson, the first-year picked the corner to give the Crimson a 2-0 lead heading into the first intermission.
Picking up where it left off, the Crimson added another two goals in the second period, including one on the power play.
Mick Thompson added his second goal of the game on the man advantage after the fourth line drew a penalty by pinning the Engineers in their own end. Assisted by
Joe Miller and
Ryan Healey, Thompson picked up a pass on the goal line and scored after making a quick turn toward the net.
As the second period was coming to a close,
Michael Callow capitalized on an RPI turnover and put a puck on net that
Justin Solovey picked up for his third goal of the year with 0.5 seconds left on the clock to give Harvard a 4-0 lead heading into the second intermission.
RPI scored early in the third to make it 4-1 after getting multiple chances in the crease as Koskenvuo and the Crimson defense tried to keep the puck from crossing the line.
Harvard took two penalties in the third period and successfully killed off one of the two as the Engineers scored to make it 4-2 with just under five minutes left in the third.
Casey Severo hit the empty net to seal the win for the Crimson as it heads into a big matchup with Union tomorrow night.
