Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

Women’s Ice Hockey’s Upset Bid Falls Just Short In Overtime Loss to No. 5 Colgate

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The No. 5 Colgate Raiders were on upset watch after the Gabi Davidson Adams potted two powerplay goals in the third period on Friday night at the Bright-Landry Hockey Center. The Crimson (2-17-2, 1-13-1 ECACH) could not hold on as the Raiders (21-6-0, 12-3-0 ECACH) completed the comeback in overtime to escape with the win. Harvard earned a point in the hard-fought battle with the fifth-ranked team in the nation.

How it Happened
The fifth-ranked Colgate Raiders came into the Bright-Landry Hockey Center to take on the Crimson to kick off a busy weekend for the Harvard side. The PWHL's Boston Fleet were in attendance as 10 professional players from the team joined the fans in the stands while two players, Jillian Dempsey '13 and Sydney Bard (Colgate '24) dropped the puck in a pre-game ceremony.

The Raiders jumped out to a fast start, putting six shots on goal in the opening ten minutes, matched by three opportunities for the Crimson. Starting Crimson goaltender, Ainsley Tuffy, made the saves on all six chances to keep the Raiders off the board. Harvard kept pushing, registering eight shots on goal in the opening period without finding the back of the net. Colgate added the first goal of the game with just two and a half minutes left in the opening period. The Raiders took its 1-0 advantage into the first intermission with the lead in shots at 14-8.

Harvard created a few good chances in the second period, the best coming on a two-on-one chance between Gabi Davidson Adams and Angelica Megdanis. Davidson Adams put a shot off the pads that rebounded out in for Megdanis, who got a stick on the loose puck and lifted a shot towards the net but was denied after an athletic save from the Colgate goalkeeper. Harvard put six more shots on net in the period but could not put a tally on the board. Tuffy weathered a storm of shots in the frame but stood tall, making 13 saves to keep the score at 1-0 going into the second intermission.

The Crimson went on a five-minute powerplay late in the second period after a Raider skater was set to the locker room with a game misconduct for a hit from behind. The powerplay set up a Crimson surge to start the third period.

Early in the frame, Davidson Adams tied the score with a powerplay goal after a perfect cross-crease feed from Emily Hamann. Two minutes later, Harvard went back on the advantage and once again Davidson Adams lit the lamp to give the Crimson a 2-1 lead. GDA's second goal was assisted by Maria Pape and Keira Ley with 16:16 left in regulation.

After the go-ahead goal, Harvard controlled possession for the following minutes, keeping the puck deep in the Colgate end. The Raiders powered back, putting a series of shots on Tuffy, all of which were stopped by the first-year netminder. The Raider found the game-tying goal with just under three minutes left in regulation as the game would move on to a five-minute overtime.

The Raiders would steal the win after scoring the game-winning goal halfway through the overtime period.
