Skiing Opens Racing at Saint Michael’s Carnival

JEFFERSONVILLE, Vt. and HUNTINGTON, Vt. – Senior Quincy Donley and first-years Duncan Armstrong, Skylar Sheppard, and Bennett Hutchison all posted top-20 finishes as Harvard University skiing opened racing at the Saint Michael's Carnival on day one on Friday.
 
In alpine action at Smugglers' Notch, Armstrong led the Crimson with a 14th-place finish in the men's giant slalom for his fourth top-20 of the year while Sheppard paced the women's side with an 19th-place effort in the women's giant slalom, marking her fourth straight top-20 finish.
 
In nordic competition at Sleepy Hollow, Donley notched her fourth straight top-20 effort with a 14th-place finish in the women's 10k freestyle interval start while Hutchison paced the men's team, coming in a season-best 16th place in the men's 10k freestyle.
 
As a team, Harvard sits in ninth place out of 14 EISA schools with 180 points.
 
Harvard will close competition at the Saint Michael's Carnival tomorrow – Saturday, Feb. 1 – with alpine competing in the slalom and nordic taking part in the 3x5k classic relay.

Harvard Highlights: Alpine Day 1

  • First-year Duncan Armstrong tallied his fourth top-finish in five races to open the season behind a 14th-place finish in the men's giant slalom. He posted a time of 1:50.48 (53.64 run one, 56.84 run two) for 27 EISA points and 18 NCAA points. Armstrong has placed in the top 30 in all five races this season.
  • First-year Skylar Sheppard registered her fourth straight top-20 showing of the year with a 19th-place finish in the women's giant slalom. She came in with a time of 1:53.71 (55.19 run one, 58.52 run two) for 22 EISA points and 12 NCAA points.

Harvard Highlights: Nordic Day 1

  • Senior Quincy Donley posted her fourth straight top-20 finish behind a 14th-place effort in the women's 10k freestyle interval start. She tallied a time of 29:40.60 alongside 27 EISA points and 18 NCAA points.
  • First-year Bennett Hutchison paced the Crimson's men's contingent with a season-best 16th-place finish in the men's 10k freestyle behind a time of 26:02.50 for 26 EISA points and 15 NCAA points.
  • In the women's 10k freestyle, sophomore Breagh Bridge (season-best 27th, 30:33.30, 19 EISA points, four NCAA points), sophomore Clara Lake (32nd, 30:46.60, 17 EISA points), and senior Tali Wong (33rd, 30:59.50) all came in the top 35.
  • First-year Elias Soulé posted his fourth top-30 finish of the season with a 27th-place showing in the men's 10k freestyle with a time of 26:34.20, collecting 19 EISA points and four NCAA points.

Next weekend, Harvard will compete at the Dartmouth Carnival from Feb. 7-8 with alpine events at the Dartmouth Skiway in Lyme Center, New Hampshire and nordic events at Oak Hill in Hanover, New Hampshire.
