CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Harvard women's volleyball (3-8, 2-1 Ivy) dominated the opening set against Penn (6-7, 0-3 Ivy) but ultimately fell in the first match of the weekend, 3-1 (25-19, 18-25, 17-25, 22-25).
How it Happened
The Crimson home-court energy was prominent early as it exploded to an 8-3 lead and forced a Quakers timeout. Harvard never let up as it continued to dominate the opening set in its entirety. The Crimson took a 1-0 lead in the match after leading by as many as 10 and securing the set at 25-19. Harvard's offense was unstoppable in the opening set as it recorded 17 kills while hitting at a .455 clip.
Penn regrouped and flipped the script in the second, forming its own 9-3 lead to begin the set. Despite Harvard's continued pursuit, the Quakers early lead proved enough to maintain the advantage, ultimately sealing the set, 25-18.
After a back-and-forth first few points, a 4-0 Penn run created the first significant lead of the third set. Harvard battled back to pull within two, but the foes picked their momentum back up, growing its lead to as many as eight in the frame. The Quakers eventually took a 2-1 lead in the contest following a 25-17 third set decision.
Harvard halted Penn from forming an early set lead in the fourth as the two Ivy foes battled tightly. With each Quakers push, the Crimson responded to remain in front during the middle portion of the set. The later points of the frame were a back-and-forth affair, but the Quakers ultimately prevailed 25-22.
Harvard Highlights
- Brynne Faltinsky flirted with her career-high, recording 17 kills while hitting at a .364 clip. The senior also added two aces and five digs in the contest.
- Sofia Rossi registered double-figure kills for the third straight contest as she added 10 against the Quakers.
- Ryleigh Patterson and Ali Farquhar also had strong offensive nights, both recording seven kills while hitting .350 or better.
- Nicole Cornell notched a career-best 27 assists while also contributing seven digs in the four-set contest.
