Veghte Scores Equalizer, Men’s Soccer Battles Yale in 1-1 Draw

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Senior defender Ethan Veghte scored an equalizer with just over 11 minutes remaining in the second half as Harvard University men's soccer battled Yale University in a 1-1 draw on Saturday night at Jordan Field.
 
Playing in the second game of a three-match homestand, the Crimson (3-4-4, 0-2-1 Ivy) drew level in the 79th minute after the visiting Bulldogs (2-6-3, 1-1-1 Ivy) netted the contest's first goal in the 74th minute.
 
Veghte notched his first goal of the season and third goal of his career following assists from sophomore center backs Alexander Castel and Tim Langenbahn. After Langenbahn played a pass to Castel, Castel lofted a pass forward to Veghte, who sent a one-timed shot into the back of the net.

Harvard Highlights

  • Senior defender Ethan Veghte scored his first goal of the season on his equalizer in the 79th minute. He now has three career goals and nine career points. He scored for the first time since Nov. 4, 2023 after missing the majority of the 2024 season due to injury.
  • Sophomore defender Alexander Castel notched his first assist of the season and the second assist of his career.
  • Sophomore defender Tim Langenbahn posted his first career assist. He now has three points on the year on one goal and one assist.
  • Senior goalkeeper Lucian Wood made three saves. For the year, he has allowed one or fewer goals in six of his seven starts for a 1.00 GAA on the season.
  • Among the Crimson's field players, Castel, Langenbahn, and fellow sophomore Nayan Das all played the full 90 minutes. Langenbahn leads the Crimson with 956 minutes played on the season out of a possible 990 minutes.
  • Senior Rustin Khosravi registered a game-high three shots.
  • For the match, Harvard led in shots (11-7) and corner kicks (4-3), while each side recorded four shots on goal.
  • In the second half, the Crimson held advantages in shots (9-3), shots on goal (3-2), and corners (4-0).

How It Happened

  • Wood made a point-blank save in the 13th minute, stopping a volley after the Bulldogs worked the ball up the field with a long ball.
  • In the 24th minute, Wood stood tall to snare a ball in the box following a free kick.
  • Senior Nicholas Nyquist nearly scored the contest's first goal in the 40th minute, firing a shot on target from inside the penalty area that required a reaction save.
  • Wood tallied his third save of the night in the 65th minute, coming off his line to deny a shot from six yards out.
  • Junior Dylan Tellado almost put the Crimson in front in the 69th minute as his shot from close range following a corner kick forced a Yale defender to clear the ball off the line with a header.
  • Yale netted the game's first goal in the 74th minute as Angelo Zhu scored following two consecutive long passes up the field from Sven Meacham and Simon Adjakple.
  • Harvard responded in the 79th minute as Veghte equalized off assists from Castel and Langenbahn. After Langenbahn played a pass to Castel, Castel lofted pass into the penalty area, allowing Veghte to send a one-timed shot into the back of the net.
  • Junior Andreas Savva sent a driven shot on frame in the 90th minute as a final chance for the hosts to take the decision.
