Poliakov’s Brace Powers Men’s Soccer Past Brown, 4-2

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – First-year Adam Poliakov scored a pair of goals in the second half, and first-years Alejandro Palacio and Lucas Benuce Sarvas each netted a goal in the first half as Harvard University men's soccer beat Brown University, 4-2, on Saturday afternoon at Jordan Field.
 
Facing a 2-1 deficit in the first half, the Crimson (4-4-4, 1-2-1 Ivy) registered the game's final three goals, including the game-winning goal from Poliakov in the 70th minute as the hosts topped the Bears (5-5-2, 1-2-1 Ivy) to close out a three-game homestand.
 
After Palacio opened the game's scoring in the fourth minute, the Bears responded with back-to-back goals in the 19th and 33rd minutes to move ahead 2-1. Benuce Sarvas found an equalizer in the 38th minute as the two teams stood tied at 2-2 at halftime. Poliakov then scored the game-winner in the 70th minute and added an insurance tally in the 89th minute to seal the win. 

Harvard Highlights

  • The Crimson compiled a season-high four goals.
  • First-year Adam Poliakov scored his first two collegiate goals, becoming the second member of the Crimson to register a brace this season. He recorded his first career game-winning goal. Poliakov totaled a game-high four shots and team-high two shots on goal.
  • First-year Alejandro Palacio tallied his second goal of the season.
  • First-year Lucas Benuce Sarvas netted his first career goal.
  • Sophomore Phoenix Wooten notched a career-high two assists. He now has six points on the season behind a goal and a team-best four assists.
  • Junior Dylan Tellado contributed an assist – his third of the season. He ranks second on the team with seven points on the year.
  • Junior Andreas Savva added an assist – his third of the year. He leads the team with nine points on the season.
  • Senior goalkeeper Cullen MacNeil made two saves in the win.
  • Among the Crimson's field players, Palacio and sophomore center backs Alexander Castel and Tim Langenbahn all played the full 90 minutes.
  • For the match, Harvard led in shots (12-9), shots on goal (6-4), and corner kicks (8-6). 
 

How It Happened

  • Palacio opened the game's scoring in the fourth minute, heading home a corner kick off the foot of Wooten,
  • Brown drew level at 1-1 in the 19th minute as Jamin Gogo Peters scored from inside the penalty area off assists from Marshall Treese and Lorenzo Amaral.
  • The Bears went ahead, 2-1, in the 33rd minute behind a goal from Mateo Pereyra and assist from Greyson Mitchell following a long throw from Mitchell.
  • Benuce Sarvas equalized for Harvard in the 38th minute, sending an in-swinging corner kick from the left side that found the back of the net to make the score 2-2..
  • Poliakov netted the game-winning goal on a rebound in the 70th minute. After Tellado fired a shot on goal, Poliakov pounced on the ensuing rebound, knocking the ball into the goal to push Harvard ahead 3-2.
  • In the 72nd minute, MacNeil made a diving save to his left to keep the Crimson in front.
  • Poliakov added a goal in the 89th minute, burying an impressive strike off a well-paced pass from Savva.
