Men’s Basketball Battles Providence in Exhibition, Falls 85-77

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Sophomore guard Robert Hinton led four Crimson in double figures with a game-high 21 points as Harvard Men's Basketball battled Providence College in an exhibition game, falling 85-77, on Saturday afternoon at Amica Mutual Pavilion.
 
Playing in its exhibition opener, the Crimson scored 50 points in the second half, trimming an 18-point halftime deficit down to six points twice inside of the final two minutes before the host Friars held on for the victory.
 
Hinton scored his 21 points on 9-of-13 shooting, including tallying 15 points in the second half. Sophomore guard Tey Barbour (15 points, six rebounds, 3-of-6 3-pointers), senior guard Chandler Piggé (12 points, 5-of-9 field goals, three assists), and junior forward Thomas Batties II (12 points, three assists) joined him in double figures.

Harvard Highlights

  • Sophomore guard Robert Hinton scored a game-high 21 points on 9-of-13 field goals. He tallied 15 points in the second half on 6-of-7 shooting.
  • Sophomore guard Tey Barbour posted 15 points and six rebounds, while hitting 3-of-6 3-pointers.
  • Senior guard Chandler Piggé registered 12 points and three assists, while making 5-of-9 field goals and 2-of-4 3-pointers.
  • Junior forward Thomas Batties II contributed 12 points and three assists.
  • First-year forward Ryan Sullivan grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds to go with six points on 3-of-6 shooting.
  • First-year forward Kenan Parrish contributed eight points, five rebounds, and a team-high two blocks.
  • In the second half, Harvard shot 55.9 percent from the field (19-of-34) and 46.2 percent from 3-point distance (6-of-13). The Crimson outscored the hosts 50-40 in the second stanza.
  • For the game, the Crimson shot 50.0 percent from the floor and 34.6 percent from downtown. 
 

How It Happened

  • Harvard remained within 14-11 of Providence at the 10:42 mark of the first half following a pair of jumpers from Hinton alongside dunks from Piggé and Sullivan and a 3-pointer from Barbour.
  • After the Friars pulled ahead 31-18, a jumper from Batties II and a pair of free throws kept the Crimson within 31-22 with 5:14 left in the opening half.
  • Hinton scored the first half's final bucket as PC brought a 45-27 lead into halftime.
  • The Crimson used a 7-0 run early in the second half, beginning with a 3-pointer from Barbour, to cut the deficit to 47-34 with 16:10 remaining.
  • A 3-pointer from Piggé and dunk from Batties II trimmed the margin to 10 points at 51-41 with 15:05 left.
  • The Crimson then used a 13-5 run to pull within seven points at 61-54 with 9:03 to go. Barbour scored the final five points of the run with a pair of free throws and a 3-pointer.
  • After Providence moved the margin back to 15 at 75-60 with 5:01 to play, the Crimson rallied to pull back within single digits at 79-70 with 3:13 to go. Batties II hit a pair of 3-pointers and Hinton netted four points during the stretch.
  • The Crimson pulled within six points twice in the final two minutes – at 81-75 with 1:48 on the clock following a Barbour 3-pointer and at 83-77 with 55 seconds left on a pair of free throws from Barbour – before the Friars held on for the decision.
