Adam Poliakov scored his fourth goal in his last three matches, but Harvard University men's soccer fell at Columbia University, 3-1, on Saturday night at Rocco B. Commisso Soccer Stadium.
Following a scoreless first half, the Crimson (5-5-4, 1-3-1 Ivy) scored in the 70
th minute to pull within 2-1 after the Lions (2-6-4, 1-3-1 Ivy) netted goals in the 59
th and 65
th minutes before the hosts added an insurance tally in the 75
th minute.
Poliakov scored a goal for the third straight game while Harvard fell for the first time since Oct. 4 following a four-match unbeaten streak in which the Crimson went 2-0-2, including 4-2 victories in each of its last two outings.
Harvard Highlights
- First-year Adam Poliakov scored his fourth goal in his last three matches and found the back of the net for the third straight game. After posting a brace against Brown (Oct. 18) with his first two collegiate goals, he has scored one goal in back-to-back games against Stonehill (Oct. 22) and Columbia (Oct. 25).
- Senior goalkeeper Cullen MacNeil made five saves. He has tallied five or more saves in each of three matches this season and has totaled 12 saves over his last two games.
- Among the Crimson's field players, sophomores Alexander Castel and Phoenix Wooten both played the full 90 minutes.
- Junior Andreas Savva paced the Crimson in shots (four) and shots on goal (two).
- For the match, Harvard narrowly trailed Columbia in shots (12-11) and shots on goal (8-5) while each side took four corner kicks.
How It Happened
- Inside of the game's first 20 minutes, Savva tested the Lions' back line with an attempt from inside the box in the 12th minute before MacNeil made a reaction save on a Columbia shot in the 18th minute.
- MacNeil made another save following a long throw-in in the 30th minute as the two teams remained tied at 0-0 at halftime.
- The Lions broke the deadlock in the 59th minute as Brandon Newman scored following a pass across the face of the goal from Will Case.
- After MacNeil made a save, Columbia moved ahead 2-0 in the 65th minute on the ensuing corner kick as Case scored off the set piece.
- Poliakov nearly responded in the 66th minute as his low, driven shot required a save.
- Poliakov then brought Harvard within one at 2-1 in the 70th minute, carrying a ball from the left side into the center of the pitch before placing a shot from the top of the penalty area into the bottom left corner of the goal.
- Columbia moved the margin back to two goals at 3-1 in the 75th minute as Stepan Kapranov ran onto a through ball behind the defense and slotted a shot into the goal.
- The Crimson continued to pressure the hosts inside of the final hour as Savva drove a shot on target in the 76th minute and Poliakov tested the keeper in a one-on-one situation in the 77th minute during a stretch in which Harvard compiled four shots inside of the final 15 minutes.
