BERKELEY, Calif. – Harvard women's basketball (2-3) fell to California (4-1), 76-65, last night to conclude its West Coast road trip. The Crimson leaves the Raising the B.A.R. Invitational and the Golden State 1-1 after previously defeating Oakland on night one.
How it Happened
The first quarter was a back-and-forth affair with seven lead changes in the first five minutes. A layup from
Abigail Wright put Harvard up 10-9 at the 5:37 mark and the Crimson would hold that lead for the remainder of the frame. Harvard headed into the second quarter with a slight 18-15 advantage.
The Crimson used the first minute of the second frame to grow its lead out to seven but shortly after Cal's offense began to settle back in. The Golden Bears used the next four minutes to cut into the deficit and eventually take the lead at 27-24 at the 5:29 mark. Harvard continued to battle on both ends of the ball and trailed by just two heading into the locker room.
After not scoring for the first two minutes following the break, the Crimson's offense came alive with a 10-0 run to pull back in front 45-39. Despite the advantage beginning to dwindle, Harvard still held control of the lead for the majority of the third quarter. The Golden Bears, however, found their groove again with a 9-1 run to lead 57-50 heading into the final 10 minutes.
Despite its fight, Cal responded to each Harvard punch thrown, maintaining its sizable lead throughout the last quarter. In the end, the Golden Bears hung on and took home the invitational championship with a 76-65 victory.
Harvard Highlights
- Abigail Wright led all scorers with a career-high 23 points on 8-of-17 shooting from the field and 7-of-9 from the charity stripe. The junior also pulled down a team-high seven boards.
- Karlee White also had a career night with 18 points on 8-of-15 shooting. White also matched Wright's team-best seven rebounds.
- By averaging 17.0 points, 56.5% shooting, 5.5 rebounds, and 1.0 steals, White was named to the Raising the B.A.R. Invitational All-Tournament Team.
- Saniyah Glenn-Bello had an all-around performance, contributing 13 points on 6-of-8 shooting, four rebounds, a team-best three assists, and a pair of blocks.
