Men's Hockey Falls to No. 17 Cornell in ECAC Opener

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Two third-period goals lifted No. 17 Cornell over Harvard, 3-1, on Friday night in the ECAC opener for the Crimson. The loss was Harvard's first of the season, as the Crimson will close the weekend tomorrow night against Colgate at Bright-Landry Hockey Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Aidan Lane opened the scoring with a quick move in front of the net to give Harvard a 1-0 lead in the first period. Assisted by Heikki Ruohonen and Richard Gallant, the rookie line has now combined for three goals in the last three games to start the 172nd meeting between the Ivy rivals.

Harvard carried its 1-0 lead into the intermission behind strong play from goaltender Ben Charette, who made 12 saves in the opening frame.

Cornell evened the score midway through the second period on a give-and-go play. Big Red goaltender Alexis Cournoyer stopped 12 shots in the period to keep the game tied heading into the third.

The Big Red took a 2-1 lead early in the final frame after a loose puck found its way into the slot. Harvard pushed late, drawing a power play in the closing minutes, but Cornell sealed the win with a shorthanded breakaway goal.

NEXT UP
Harvard returns to Bright-Landry tomorrow night to face Colgate at 7:00 p.m.
