CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Men's hockey won a thriller on Saturday night, defeating Colgate, 6-5, in a back-and-forth battle at Bright-Landry. Six different Crimson skaters found the back of the net in a game that had a little bit of everything.
Harvard led 3-0 and 6-3 before holding strong late, killing a penalty with under two minutes to play to secure its second win of the season. The Crimson improves to 2-1-1 heading into next weekend's North Country trip.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Harvard jumped out fast with two goals less than a minute apart. In his season debut,
Salvatore Guzzo opened the scoring after a give-and-go from
Marek Hejduk and
Mason Langenbrunner sparked a rush up ice that deflected in off Guzzo. Moments later,
Casey Severo doubled the lead, finishing off a play started by
Philip Tresca at the blue line. After Tresca held the zone, the puck found its way through Mick
Thompson to Severo, who buried his second of the year.
Joe Miller made it 3-0 late in the first period, sniping the top corner from a sharp angle for his first of the season, assisted by
Ben MacDonald. Colgate responded before the end of the frame to make it 3-1 after one.
The Raiders carried that momentum into the second, scoring twice in the opening five minutes to tie the game at three. Harvard answered immediately.
Mick Thompson reclaimed the lead with his second of the year before
Ryan Healey, in his 100th career game, added a highlight-reel goal, walking a defender and picking the corner to make it 5-3.
A few minutes later,
Philip Tresca netted Harvard's first power-play goal of the season, splitting the defense and going bar-down for his second of the year. The senior now has two breakaway goals in four home games this season.
Colgate added one more before the second intermission and another late in the third, but Harvard held firm down the stretch to close out the win.
