Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

Women’s Ice Hockey Shuts Out Dartmouth in 3-0 Victory

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Harvard women's ice hockey team cruised to victory this afternoon with a commanding 3-0 win over Dartmouth at the Bright-Landry Hockey Center. The Crimson (4-3-1, 2-3-1 ECAC) came out strong from the opening puck drop, scoring twice in the first period and adding another tally in the second to seal the win over the Big Green (2-5-1, 2-3-1 ECAC). Senior goaltender Emily Davidson was stellar between the pipes, stopping all 27 shots she faced to record her second shutout of the season.

"That was such a good weekend of hockey. For all 65 minutes yesterday, 60 minutes today, I thought both teams just played extremely hard," said the Landry Family Head Coach Laura Bellamy after the win. "But it felt close the whole game and just proud of our group for coming through. I feel like that was a character win, a huge team win and big for us right now to come back and get that today."

The Crimson's top line of Morgan McGathey, Elle Sproule and Carla McSweeney created two of the team's three goals this afternoon to help on the offensive end. Sproule and McSweeney each tallied a goal while McGathey picked up an assist.

"They really drive possession for us," continued Bellamy. "They have the puck a lot and that's hard to do as first year in college hockey. They're learning on the fly and we're putting their feet to the fire but that's only going to make them better as we go. They're capable of a lot."

Elle Sproule's goal in the first period was the first of her collegiate career and the first for the line since they began playing together three weeks ago. The Crimson first-years have been valuable additions to the lineup since the jump, but Sproule believes moving forward this effort will give the group more confidence.

"We've been working super hard these last few weeks," said Sproule after the win. "It feels great to finally get a few points on the board and now we feel like the flood gates are finally open. We're going to keep working hard as a group and we're very fortunate to have a team that believes in us and supports us."

The victory gave the Crimson three more points in the ECAC standings, pushing the team's total to 7.5.

How It Happened

Harvard wasted little time establishing control in the first period. At the 6:50 mark, Zoe Boosamra opened the scoring by burying a rebound in front off a setup from Angelica Megdanis, giving the Crimson a 1-0 advantage. The goal was Boosamra's second of the year and would stand as the eventual game-winner.

The Crimson doubled their lead just over three minutes later when first-year Elle Sproule scored her first collegiate goal at 10:15 of the opening frame. After Keira Ley sent a shot towards the net, Sproule got her stick on the pucl, redirecting it into the back of the net with Carla McSweeney adding the secondary assist. Harvard's defense stood tall the rest of the period, with Davidson turning aside all 12 shots she faced to maintain the 2-0 lead heading into the first intermission.

Harvard's strong play continued into the second period. Controlling puck possession and outshooting Dartmouth 15-7 in the frame, the Crimson struck again late when McSweeney slammed home a rebound off a Sproule shot attempt, making it 3-0 Crimson. The goal was McSweeney's second of the season and capped a dominant offensive performance from Harvard.

The Crimson defense continued to shut down Dartmouth through the third, killing off three penalties and blocking 16 shots on the afternoon to preserve the clean sheet. Davidson was sharp throughout, making eight more saves in the final frame to secure the shutout victory.
